Rings, bearings, etc for a D16Y8
Hello everybody. I'm new to this honda game. I just bought a 97 EX coupe for a daily driver. The has some nasty bottom end noise, so I'm going to rebuild the motor. Where is the best place to buy internals for this car and what should I expect to pay for just the parts? I'm going to do the build myself. It is an automatic, so I don't need anything exotic. I just want stock style parts that will last forever.

Are they new? You'll have to tell me a price because I have no freaking idea of what Honda stuff goes for. I'm used to VW and Subaru stuff.

Rings are about $100 worth
bearings are $100 for ACL's or about $300 for Honda OEM bearings (rods, mains, thrusts)
Pistons, who knows. Stock ones I wouldn't expect to go for more then say $60ish

Re: (Hybrid93Eg)
I don't want to do something that will require new pistons. I just wanna do a quick and dirty refresh. I'm trying to find a fairly clean block that I can just run the brushes through, re-ring, re-bearing and re-assemble. I'm sure I would want to get new rod bolts as well. I want to do it as cheap as possible without getting absolute junk. I'm sure that I could buy clevite bearings for fairly cheap. A set of stock rings should cost about $100? I'm not looking for anything other than stock performance. This will not be some high boosted, high rpm or high compression motor. It's just in a automatic that I will drive back and forth to work in. It's also good because I can have something that my girlfriend can drive when I drink too much!

You can get ACL rod/main/thrust bearings with assembly lube and Plastigauge from Camp1320.com. They have a user name here (I believe spelled the same) or you can cruise the Sponsor's Marketplace under the Performance forum. They go for $74 shipped (or something close to that). I ordered my bearings from the when I built my Y8 and they really took care of me. Highly recommended...
Otherwise, for stock Honda replacement stuff, it's hard to beat the prices at http://www.hondapartsdeals.com. I ordered all my stock gaskets, sensors, seals, etc., from them and they are awesome. They are a dealership on the east coast and can get any Honda part. Fast shipping and you can do all your ordering online. Highly recommend them, as well.
Good luck with the rebuild. As long as you're in there, you may as well put a new oil pump, water pump and timing belt on. May get a little more expensive, but good preventative maintenance.

All i can really add is that you should most definatly buy OEM Honda rings. The quality in Honda's rings is what gives them their reputation for long lasting engines.

You wouldn't happen to honestly believe that Honda doesn't have a supplier for those rings would you? I think you will find they don't actually "forge" thier own rings.

I definitely like using OEM parts when doing an OEM build. There's nothing like the quality that you get with OEM.

Actually, before Honda ever built motorcycles, small engines or cars, they began as a company that manufactured piston rings.
