They'll fit. I was running 18"x7-7.5" rims w/ low profile tires. Stock suspension they didn't rub at all, but the car looked like a 4x4.
I have the car lowered on Tein S-Techs and I would get occasional rubbing, but nothing major.
They'll fit, but you'll have to go with a low-profile tire and if you don't lower it the car will sit like a 4x4.

If you're going to get a nice wheel I'd say 17 is fine, but make sure you lower it at least a little bit, as well as get a camber kit.
17"-18" tires can be expensive (I think Kumhos for my 18"s are around $100/piece).
It's really personal taste. If you like the 17s then get them. I no longer like my 18s simply because of the extra weight (cheap motegi's I got from a friend, very heavy), instead I run my steelies. I might get a set of the hubcap spinners just for ***** and giggles.
I've heard that 16" tires can be a pita to find. Personally I'd go with a 17" wheel just because I like the look of the bigger rim with less rubber.

Re: (Everyones Hero)
the only reason im going so big with the 17" rim is because i have a set of low pro yokohamo tires for 17"rims already yokohomo does any one have any pics of their car with 17s on their car before they lowered it

to some eyes 17s look better than a smaller rim, but any performance benefit is unfounded. typically a larger rim like that will add weight, and detract from the ride quality and braking ability. by the way-what's the sidewall height on those tires you have? ex:205 R17__?
