Default resonator

my cat-back exhaust is too loud for my taste. would installing one of those vibrant exhaust resonators on there quiet it down without losing any power? also, where exactly does this go. exhaust noob ftw.

kinda sorta. what kind of exhaust do you have?

here are my tips:

Buy an APEX'i world sport or RSR exmag. They sound AWESOME look AWESOME and the world sport is fairly cheap.

USE A CAT. for environmental, and sound purposes.

well, if you buy the world sport muffler only, it's still going to be loud since it's straight thru.

Buy the Apex'i world sport catback. It will look and sound nicer than your kung fu racing exhaust.

Again, are you using a cat?

Yes, a resonator will quiet it down some, without losing power. How much is a different story. I can't tell you for sure, but my car got louder at CERTAIN rpm's when I got rid of the resonator, yet it was stock sounding at idle. If you do decide to get one, it will go AFTER the CAT and BEFORE the muffler, usually on the mid pipe if you have a 2 piece cat back exhaust system. If you get both a cat and a resonator, your car will quiet down alot.

Some people do happen to run 2 resonators ... depending on the price, that could be an option as well.

once again, i'm an exhaust noob so don't bash me hahaha, but if i am running a cat-back exhaust, does that mean i'm not using a cat anymore? i don't want my car to quiet down so that all you can hear is the engine. i want it to be a deep more mellow sound. right now it sounds like a motorcycle. so you would say get a catalyic convertor and put it on there and see how much it quiets down, and if not enough then get a resonator, and using both pieces it will quiet it down but i'll still have a good sounding exhaust?

you would probably lose a little bit of power because you are restricting the airflow. ive heard that you gain a little bit of torque with that but i dont know too much about that.

just run a cat with 2.5 piping all the way for dd purposes, and for days at the track just buy one of those omni power test pipes which replaces you cat with a free flowing pipe. Its a bolt on pipe that you can remove and should be the same size as the cat with a 3 bolt flange!

so if i'm running a cat-back exhaust and its overwhelmingly loud, odds are i don't have a cat right?

A cat-back exhaust is just that, it runs from the cat back to the rear of your car. If you dont have a cat to begin with then you wont have one when you install the exhaust. If you have one now the cat-back exhaust shouldnt eliminate it. Run a cat though, not a free flowing pipe... especially if you are concerned with noise. Exhausts with no cat are loud as hell.

okay, so in other words, if i purchased a resonator, it would REPLACE my catalyic convertor

No it doesn't have to. Normally an exhaust goes like thi

[cat converter]=======[resonator]======{muffler}=

your piping has a lot to do with the sound of the exhaust, just replacing the muffler will change it a little but in the end not as much.
just save yourself the trouble with your autozone fartcan and get a nice tone'd exhaust system

A small trend ive seen is installing 2 resonators in a row, gives off a real deep tone, with almost no raspyness, and its pretty low key too, not too loud.

OMG. jkaz, go stuck you head under your car and check to see if there is a Cat or a resonator. I'm guessing you have both.

just make sure you don't buy a cheap eBay resonator. it will rattle and then just sound horrible.

no. dont replace your cat with anything.

The resonator just provides an extra noise buffer. If you have a straight thru muffler, it's kind of like having no muffler.

Your catback does not replace your cat.

It goes from the cat back.

Keep your cat. It will not help increase your power that much to delete it. It will make your car noisy, and smelly.

Get a quieter exhaust. The APEX'i world sport sounds very nice and deep and mellow. I cant recommend that tone enough.
