True old thread but telling someone to unplug the light.....he might want his driver airbag to work.

I'm losing your logic here. I understand it has no airbag but it still has a drivers side.

So fixing the code would render his drivers side operational correct?

I'm not 100% on this and am ok with being wrong but would like clarification

If there was a air bag and you removed it the resistor would be plugged into the connector that would plug into the air bag.

its hard to sell a car when it appears to normal folk that theres a problem when the cluster lights up SRS. I got it saftied with the light on cause the mechanic knew that the car didnt have a passenger airbag. I just wanted to fix it properly.

oh also...isnt it better to bump an old thread instead of starting a new one for the same issue????

In general, no. It confuses readers, who often respond to the first post.

In addition, 4 ???? are not better than one ?.

If the answer wasn't provided than you start a new thread detailing your findings and explain your situation.

If you want it "fixed properly", then why are you trying to ghetto rig a resistor? Either fix it, or don't.

I could be mistaken, but stock Civics sold without a passenger airbag may have included a resistor to prevent the SRS code.

If the SRS light is on none of the airbags will deploy in an accident.

The resistor is supposed to be there. It let Honda use one airbag module for hatchbacks (and maybe coupes and sedans as well, I haven't checked part numbers)

My 96 cx never had a passenger airbag and my resistor is in a plug right by the srs module behind lower centre counsel not up by the dash plate

I've looked through Honda parts site and they list a passenger side airbag for both the 96 and 98. So where is this coming from that certain models didn't come with passenger side airbags? Maybe you bought the car used and it already had the passenger side airbag blockoff but for any us spec model civic they always had airbags for both driver and passenger.

If you're not worried about the safety of your passenger and yourself use the resistor trick.

Canadian CXs didn't have them. See here: Toronto Honda Parts - Parts List

Was it an option or came standard? The guy with the 96 cx says he has one.

The airbag or the resistor?

The base model CX didn't have a passenger's side airbag here in Canada from '96 - '00. The '96 - '97 CX-G (or CX with option package as it was referred to in the sales brochure) and '98 - 00 DX (there was no Canadian DX model for '96 - '97) did come with a passenger's side airbag. On models not equipped with a passenger's side airbag there is a dummy resistor to fool the SRS control module so that the SRS light doesn't stay on, and so the driver's side airbag will deploy. This saves having to build two separate control modules.

As a bit of an aside you can use the same dummy resistor to get around replacing seatbelt pretensioners in some newer Civics ('01 - '05 IIRC) and some other Hondas. I see they're discontinued now though.

Yeah everything in the US 96+ (Actually I believe it was 94+ but not positive) was required to have an airbag for both front seats.

Thanks , this is what I was looking for. I purchased the resistor for$15 ish and need to replace it as it senses that the resistor has gone bad? The code reader shows bad passenger ab but as I don't have one in a CX hatch then I am betting on the resistor change fixing it.

Bad resistor is only one possibility. Testing the resistor is simple if you have the specs. The SRS code could also be caused by a bad wire or bad control module. Better to test than to replace parts randomly.
