I'm gonna replace the motor in the winter and just need it to run for awhile.

anyone? I know I'm suppose to replace them but I just need it to work for awhile

Honda recommends that you do. But I know they are expensive. It really depends on how many time your headgasket has blown before, have your headbolts been removed before? I have gotten away with out changing them a few times but I wouldn't recommend it.

well I just got the car about a month ago so I dunno.
I might just reuse it, and if it goes bad then o well I'll still swap either way when winter comes.

Most people say you can use them for up to 3 torque downs. You can risk it if you want.

i reused head studs once, bad experience. did it for a low compression poor mans r setup. 2 perfectly running motors, the gsr was low compression boosted, and the b16 was all motor. slapped the b16 head on the gsr bottom and reused the gsr bolts and after a couple of days of easy but boosted driving, the block stripped. I did it all in steps and everything. Thats just my experience, the next time I do it, I'm buying new head studs.

Your threads stripped out of the block form using old bolts, IMO that's weird.


OP, reuse the bolts.

you can find the right thread tap and go over the threads a few times and make sure they are clean, na dadd a few ft. lbs when your doin the re torque. theyll be safe to use twice

I think you need to study fasteners, you dont just add torque because it sounds good!! A little japanese man spent countless hours determing the proper torque for this bolt, you can't just go behind him and add torque.

Dont reuse the same bolts.
When they are torqued down, the bolts are put under a lot of stress when the motor is under a load and the bolt stretches. You wouldnt be able to see with your eyes cause they only stretch like a thousands of an inch, but if you reuse them you could risk your head lifting from the block slighty and could lose compression and leak fluids. I wouldnt take the chance seeing its such a pain in the *** job. get new ones IMO

i did that and it lasted about 150 miles. now the arps are going in

dont be cheap, dont reuse the bolt, unless you want to risk something going bad because you were a cheapo. torque it to spec, the torque spec is the tightest you can turn it in without stripping anything. so do not add more ft lbs in lbs or w.e.
