Icon2 replacing axle, do i need to change oil?

I'll be replacing my axle later and was wondering if I can reuse the transmission oil. the reason I asked is because my transmission has just been replaced on Monday.

any ideas? can I just recycle the oil? thanks!

If its fresh yes. But you might as well put new Honda ATF/MTF in it. wont hurt.

I would try to reuse the fluid. Empty the trans into a clean container.

didnt say if its auto or manual, either way, theres shouldnt be much if any fluid leaking out. if it does leak it should only be a few drops.

i wonder why the transmission was replaced earlier this week and someone left a bad axle?

You pulled the entire tranny so of course the oil spilled out. Don't have to pull the tranny to change an axle.

no ****,
when i pulled the axle out it poured, we were removing tranny cause it was shot, axles have to come out for that.

Reading Comprehension... He said "only a couple of drips" referring to when the axle is being changed, not a transmission...

Then I want to say his tranny was over filled...

OP: You shouldn't lose much fluid changing an axle. If you're worried about it, just go buy a quart of whatever you have in it now and if you don't need it, take it back.

If the proper amount of fluid is inside the tranny then:

- Automatic - should not spill any fluid when pulling an axle

- Manual - will spill some, but if you look the fill hole and diff hole where axle goes are very close level wise

If fluid comes pouring out then someone out that much extra fluid into the tranny. If fluid comes out of an auto tranny when popping an axle out then someone really overfilled that junk.

To answer the question:

If it's a manual tranny I'd drain it all out and use only Genuine Honda MTF. If you already have that then I guess try and save it for reuse.

If it's an auto and it has Genuine Honda ATF-Z1 then yes try and reuse it if you wish.

It's less than a week old anyways, right?

forgot to mention my car is stick shift.

@Blahblah718293, the axle wasn't replaced because I wanted to do it my self. didn't wanna pay the mechanic for something I can do.

btw, i replaced the axle because i hear clicking noise when turning right. the axle's outer boot is torn as well. so yeah am done replacing the axle, but how come the noise is still there? my car is lowered by 2" and I don't know if it can break newly installed axle that fast. any ideas what to check?

you guys dont mention how the car was elevated ... (duh)

if your using jack stands, the car will lean backwards, and tranny fluid level will be higher on Axle side of tranny

if using a lift the car is level and fluid wont be as high on axle side as it would be using jack stands

Believe it or not it's entirely possible to get a bad axle right out of the box. I've installed brand new, not reman, axles that either clicked when turning, or the inner joint was loose and it vibrated under acceleration.

happend to my friend with shucks axles, one clicked worse then the old one right out of the box.
I doubt a 2 inch drop will hurt axles, plenty of people lower without any issues.
