i got a 99 DX, swapped a 98 motor in, alternator is shot... so battery took a beating. so when i was outta town, i had my buddy take the battery/ecu out cause i left in a hurry and he set it on the floor of my garage, BRILLIANT. i just went out and bought a yellow top @ pep boys for $120 - core charge.

Doesn't the battery discharge if sat on the ground?
Had my 93 Hatch for over a year with no problems.

No thats a myth.. the battery doesnt discharge at all due to the plastic casing.
Also the reason why the batteries are in shelves and not the ground is because of liablity. as we know batteries are heavy (to some) so they lift them up so people can carry it easier using their knees not back.

its not a myth, if sat on the ground, especially concrete or dirt, its drained... i didn't believe it either, then i sat my old del Sol battery on the ground, brought it to sears, and didn't meet "industry specs", so couldn't be put back in the car.

Well I have had experiences with both aspects. I had left one in my shed before(concrete floor)...It drained...was unused before then. The next time I got the one that was in the car to work(thought it was dead)...so I just left it on the front porch...also concrete, then when the battery in my car died I used the one off the porch, and it started...So I dunno.
For short: Had 2 batteries(new)...left them on concrete for extended amounts of time. One worked, one didnt.

Ok how long did you let is sit on the ground? also was the battery within specs? meaning not sulfated, and all cells registered 2.1V each?
If you think of the fundamentals of electricy there is no way it can discharge to the ground.
Look even battery manafactures agree its a myth

its the fact that the battery discharges its self after time but not the concrete.

the battery should say how many monthes it should last.. i know some are like 75 monthes.. it all depends on your alternator .. and what its charging at .. if your alternator is shot or dying .. its gunna rely more on your battery for power.. have your alternator tested to see how its doin you dont wanna drain your new battery.. im still on my factory battery.. i have a 98 ..

My wifes lasted till 71k miles, 2000 Civic EX. I work at a Honda dealer and they last from about 40k to about 70k depending on how old the car is.

Is that battery a relabeled hawker?
and to stay on topic, mine last until I spill them. Finally have a sealed Pb though, so we'll see how that goes

people are so stupid, its called self discharge and it happens wherever the battery is. the only batteries which dischrage at a greater rate when sat on the ground are wood/concrete lead acid cells which were used many many years ago.. if you want your battery to last a long time make sure you dont deep dischrage it as this will encourage the formation of crystalline lead suplghate on the plates increasing its internal resistance and reducing its capacity
