Removing valve cover o-rings.

Hey everyone.

I'm trying to prep a valve cover for paint and I'm have trouble removing the inner o-rings. They're in there pretty damn tight and I already ripped one trying to pop it out. :(

They tear when you remove them. Get new ones.

Remove the old ones with needlenose pliers.

Sounds good, I was trying to pry them out with a flathead. I'm a noob when it comes to this stuff.

We are talking about the spark plug gasket under the VC? Like NOFX said, you can use a needle nose to remove them. In my experience mine always just pulled out by hand. You can also order a new VC gasket kit online from Hondapartsunlimited.com for about $43 + shipping.

We're talking about the spark plug tube seals, which normally come with the valve cover gasket set, yes.

I've never had mine pull out by hand.

Ok so I went the needle nose route and its still not going too well :(

It almost looks like they're threaded in.

Re: Removing valve cover o-rings.

They're not threaded in. That part comes out.

They basically have a big spring going around the inside of the rubber. That's what you've uncovered.

Re: Removing valve cover o-rings.

I found the spring part but basically trying to get them out with the pliers I'm putting little nicks in the actual VC I don't wanna damage it and find out that it doesn't seal properly.

Re: Removing valve cover o-rings.

I've always used the pliers, twist the seal (this collapses it and kills the seal between the rubber and valve cover) and then remove.

Pulling straight up could damage the cover and just plain be ineffective.

either pliers or a pick. Heat causes them to harden and a bitch to remove.

I’d use a propane torch and just burn them til they start to fall apart then just scrape the rest out

Re: Removing valve cover o-rings.

With pliers 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣. Turn valve cover over on a flat surface use a flathead screw driver at a angle put screw driver on lip of o-ring from looking through the top a tap(hit) it with hammer. It works with out harming vc. An to put new ones in find a socket same size put alittle grease around new o-rings(edges) an tap new ones in.
