if you want your keep your eyes, ears, nose, and the rest of your face intact, the YES, use a spring compressor. it is alot safer!

edit: remove the strut assembly first, then compress it. (misread at first)
i suck , sorry.

that sounds dangerous...

i saw a guy do this at junk yard, and the shock assembly shot across the ground at least 20 feet.

Could have seriously injured himself or someone else, not to mention possibly damaging the shock or anything it hit

i have seen someone use an air wrench n shoot it into a concrete wall and it cracked the wall.

so yeah do yourself a favor n compress the spring. Plus you need to compress the new one to put it on the shock anyway so go to autozone, give them a deposit, use the compressor then return it n get your money back

harbor freight sells spring compressors, 12bux, they work just fine for the job, and you'll have them for future cars you lower without driving to borrow more spring compressors......and, if he's going with lowering springs, chances are he will not have to compress the springs he's going to put back on the struts. i didn't have to with my neuspeed sport springs(just an fyi)

i didnt use a spring compressor both times i swapped out springs, just get a couple thick blankets wrap up the assembly and sit on it while you are removing the top nut, cover the tophat also with a part of the blanket, very minor pop.
*i am not responsible for any injury or damage, if you use my method *
