Removing my head - help!?!?
Alright, ill be the first to admit im not a car genious. But im just starting to get into repairing it myself. If you read my other thread about my car burning oil... Well I want to remove my head and give it a good cleaning. My valve cover is CAKED in crap and I assume the rest of the motor is as well.
So I know, yes pickup a manual and read it - but that takes time to order etc. I want to do this today... can someone give me some help? I removed the heat shield on the header and I see the bolts for the header. I assume that I need to drain the fluid from the radiator because I see that running there - or is that connected to the block? BLAH. I would appreciate any help I can get. Thanks guys!

Holy **** man, I can't believe you're just going to up and remove the head with absolutely no guide other than some random people on an internet site.
This isn't eaxctly a simple procedure like coil-over install or anything.
Are you bored? Really man I wouldn't worry about a slight caking on your valves or anything because it is afterall a stock DX motor.
Do you understand that you'll probably spend a few nundred dollars in parts and machine labor once you take the head off? You'll need a head set from Honda, the head will need to be milled, etc.
Just save for a motor swap if you're so worried.

Did I not just explain that to you?
The headset will be over $100.00 from Honda. Get an el cheapo one all you want, but you're taking your chances. In fact, I thought it was likw $214.00 last time I checked. Pull the head and put it back on with ols **** and you might as well have not even tried to fix it.
Machine work will be roughly $40.00 or more depending on what you have done.
Do you own a torque wrench? Better buy one of you want to do the job right.

step 1. disconect the battery
step 2. unplug all of the sensors and hoses
step 3. remove the exaust manifold
step 4. remove the head bolts and mark them so you can put them back in the same holes
step 5. go back and double check to make sure every thing is disconected
step 6. find a pry bar. put it under the edge of the head and lift easy. DO NOT STUFF THE PRY BAR BETWEEN THE HEAD AND THE BLOCK. if it doesn't come right up move to a different corner of the head and pry it again.
step 7. clean it
step 8. put it back on.
step 9. you HAVE to torque all of the head bolts in order
your done...
don't forget to buy all new gaskets because you cant reuse the old ones.

Can you explain why it would cost a few hundered to remove the head? BAH
do NOT REMOVE YOUR HEAD WITHOUT A GOOD MANUAL
jezus dude a head removal isnt like installing an intake its serious work
if you remove it incorrectly you could warp it.
you need to replace the headgasket while its off
and the intake manifold gasket if you remove the IM to take the head off
dont just go ripping **** off your engine because its "dirty"

I'm asking those questions on purpose just to see if he knows the answer.
Firget it guys. Let him pull off the head and see for himself jjst how "easy" it is to do. Pulling it off ain't the hard part, it 's putting it back on.
To do it right you'll get the entire headset which includes the headgasket, intake and exhaust manifold gaskets, head dowel pins, oil restrictor orifices, valvestem seals, and valvecover gasket. I'm sure I left off some pieces, but you get the point don't you?

Re: Removing my head - help!?!? (CIVICtypeS)
pulling a head is easy. But putting it back on is a whole different story. Its very important you follow the torque specs and torquing sequence. fork out a little money and go buy a chiltons manual.
