removing intake resonator... worthless mod?
hey guys,
while im waiting to find a junked civic for a tranny swap, i wanna do a little modding here and there.
yesterday i came across a mod where the intake resonator was removed. i read quite a few mixed responses and im still unsure if this mod is a good thing or bad (hp loss, vtec not engaging etc)
has any of you guys actually tried this? does it sound a lot louder? or is it just a waste of time?
thanks

It will not effect Vtec at all. It does make it louder and it makes almost like a honing noise of some type. It does help air flow, but a short ram intake or CAI would still be more effective.

well i thought the resonator was by the passenger side behind the bumper? how would it clean up the engine? sorry maybe im a little confused -.-
also, all i would be removing is the box right? i do not have an aftermarket cai yet, so its still ok to do this without it?

no your right..its behind the passanger side bumper...but it just looks cleaner not having that bottom portion sticking into the engine bay..thats all i meant.

if you don't turbo, i would keep it
it makes a loud noise at high rpms
only reason i removed mine is because i'm going turbo and i won't be needing it but on a stock car i would keep it
if someone needs one, i'm selling it... $20+shipping.. it's light so shipping won't be much

If you want to mod your car then go for it. Just put in a CAI or short-ram. You will feel the difference and it's a mod that is beneficial for both N/A and FI.

Remove the box and all the piping to the airfilter box. Cleanes it up a lot. Also, you will not need andy of that if you ever get a shortram or CAI so why not pull it all.

so i dont even need the U shaped pipe? wouldnt it just suck all the hot air from the engine though? (i know it already is, but the pipe still goes down to the bumper

Well with a stock intake, it doesn't even make a difference where your getting the air from. Not to mention the difference in HP from a CAI and short ram are very small. Just remember that when the car is moving, there is fresh air moving into the engine bay. Would only effect performance at very low speeds or idle.

once all that garbage is out you can really tell how much air it was restricting. i think resonator removal on a stock airbox with a k&n drop-in great. frees up a lot of air, adds a bit of power/response, costs you nothing. and the noise is kind of cool too.

Re: (phateless)
I have a D16Y7 and that resonator thing is huge and ugly...
But the engine bay is even uglier when I remove it...
So my question is... if I leave the stock resonator can I just "FILL" those 2 little pipes that go down into the resonator...
Once I took off the intake pipe from the airbox and engine was a lot louder BUT I LOST POWER... when I hit the throttle, car just started howling and rpm's wouldn't go up as quick as usual...
Would that be the case if I "disable" the resonator or would the throttle response be better???
