Default Removing Heat Sheild

Do I need the top heat sheild on my cat? I took the lower one off because it rusted out and the top one is doing the same. This causes ma ratteling sound when I accelerate so I would like to get rid of it.

I just replaced the exhaust manifold on my 96 Civic this past week-end. The heat shield has a secondary purpose of keeping the manifold bolts dry. I removed all of the manifold bolts without stripping one of them!

Not needed, they normally rust off after a few years up here. Never ever heard of someone replacing it........Just don't park in really tall dry grass or you will be sorry.

I think it's just put there to meet DOT standards and is expected to fall off....
