You can rip it off completely if you're going to replace it. There's clips behind it that secure it to the door. The new one should come with new clips if it's from the dealer.

What kind of car is it?
are you talking about the pice that runs top to botton on the back side of the window?
I think they are bolt on on 92-95 civics???
