remote starters for manual cars
anyone got one installed? how did your rig it so it doesn't start in first gear? I was thinking some kind of push sensor that detects if it's in 1st or not, attached to the shift linkage, but I am sure there are better ways

Re: remote starters for manual cars (egcoupe)
they won't do it for a reason. It says right on the box of all remote starters not to install on manual cars. Not to mention its a ****** stupid *** idea and it will haunt you where ever you go, not to mention eventually cause damage.
Go ahead, ask me how I know

Yeah, I've only been driving a manual for a few months now, but I never put it in first, always put in neutral, pull handbrake, turn off car/lights. I had this same question.

Re: (Jorsher)
I been driving manual for a few years and I always leave it in 1st..
I know about it jumpin around enough to please house of pain if you leave it in 1st...so that is why I am only looking to install it if there is a sure way that it does NOT start if I leave it in 1st..
like a sensor that is controlled based on where the shifter is in the gearbox...
The only reason I am looking to install an autostarter on my car is because I am in Ottawa, Canada...when the -40 days hits...I will be glad I got it

Re: (AzCivic1.6)
My friend installed one a couple of years back on his Prelude...we were out one night in a parking lot, it was snowy and we were curious to see how many hops it would do before it stoped..
let's just say it doesn't stop hopin t'il it hits something (or of course you turn it off with the remote)

Re: (Leb_CRX)
I've had it installed on my last 3 cars(2 manuals) and it has caused no damage. Not sure what that guy is talking about. The only damage that might be caused is if you leave it in 1st and try to start it. I've never left the car in gear so I've never done that. Just make sure if you have somewhere work on your car they ALWAYS leave the car in gear so dont use the remote start after that.
And as far as installing it, there is a sensor that you need to bypass that tells the car that the clutch must be pushed in to start the car. No idea where it's at since I havent done the install. But that's how it was explained to me by my buddy who is a professional installer.

Re: remote starters for manual cars (Leb_CRX)
Alright ppl listen up, there is way to much bull **** in this thread!
1) First off shops will put a remote starter into a manual transmission car. If they don't, they donut know enough about what there doing and you shouldn't deal with them period.
2) There are remote starters for manual transmission cars.
3) The way they work is different from one for an automatic.
A) They bypass the clutch safety switch to allow starting of the vehicle
B) The parking brake must be set
C) There's a safety procedure you follow to arm the remote starter
Now this is how mine works, You park the car leave it running, Set the parking brake leave the car in neutral. Now tap the brake pedal twice. Turn off the key (Car is still running) Exit the vehicle. Car kills. Now if any door is opened or the brake is touched or the parking brake released the car wont start remotely.
End of story!!!
Now that i explained the basic principle on how they SHOULD work or mine at least lets stop with all the un-educated replies!!!!!!
