rebuild question for future turbo
If my engine (d16y7) has 180,000 miles and I was thinking of boosting it.... I would assume it would be in my best interests to rebuild it
If I was to rebuild it for boost what would be recommended for me to do.... hp goals would prob be around 200whp and if I was to decide to look for more in the future, 250whp would be the max
so lets just say 200-220whp for now..... what would be in my best interests to do for the rebuild?
thx

Re: rebuild question for future turbo (kevo1586)
I've been planning up my summer build and have been doing a lot of research. The D series stock rods are said to break at around 220-250 whp. Depending on who you talk to. It's all in the tune though as I've heard of people pushing 300whp with them. I am going turbo this summer and I'm not going over 190-200 whp because of the stock rods. So theoretically you could get by with the stock rods but I wouldn't do it.
I also am planning to rebuild. If your only planning for 250 whp and wanna stay on a budget look into the vitara pistons. They are cast but have proven to be very very durable and will hold 250whp on a DD no problem. They are also I think about $130, versus forged which are more than double and maybe triple that. If you choose the vitara pistons get the YCP ones as they are teflon coated and are just built better.
Also with the vitara pistons with normal forged rods the compression is said to be really low (like 8:1.) fjdistributors.com is a good place to check out. They also just came out with some custom length forged rods that will bring the compression with the vitara pistons up to a good level.
Summary: forged rods are a must, definetly get those. Check out Vitara pistons and those custom length rods. If you wanna spend the money get some good forged pistons. It's like this ( forged pistons > vitaras) (vitaras = just fine) I'm personally gonna shoot for 275ish once I rebuild and I am planning to use the vitaras at the moment. As far as I know this info is accurate.

If your goals are around 200 hp then stick with stock. Okay, first thing first...do a compression check and report back on your findings. Remember, do it on a warm motor and hold the gas pedal @ WOT when cranking it over.
It'd be a time to redo some things like the timing belt, tensioner, thermostat, gaskets, etc etc. MAKE SURE YOU GET ARP HEAD STUDS. That is your greatest "insurance" against a lifting head while in boost. GL man and let us know how it goes.

Re: rebuild question for future turbo (kevo1586)
so I should buy
pistons (preferably low compression)
rings
rods
gaskets
timing belt & tensioner
thermostat
head studs
also for these numbers what turbo would everyone recommend for a DD?
t3, t3/t4?
I just want to make sure I do everything right the first time.... "If you do a half-assed job, you'll do it again"
