Default Rear Sway Bar 1998 Civic

Hi All,

I don't know if this is in the right place but looks like it might be.

Any how. I have a complete rear oem rear sway bar set up from a 1999 em1.

Now everything seems to bolt right up except the bracket that bolts to the sub frame. On the EM1 the two holes that holds the bolt for the brackets are threaded. On my 1998 Ex civic the sub frame is not threaded just a hole which is is a bit larger.

Has any one done this mod? If so what did they use to hold the brackets in or do I need to get a sub frame after market support. If I don't need a brace I don't want to spend the dollars on one, but I heard from different individuals that it will tear my sub frame. Some say no, some yes. If there is anyone who has done the mod with no support, some info would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Get the subframe brace. Torn subframe is something you don't want to have to deal with. Doing it right the first time is cheaper than doing it wrong twice.

There is no chance of tearing out the oem subframe with a stock em1 bar!

To the OP, you just need a pair of what i think are called D brackets. Most after market subframe companies sell these, including Funtion7

stock sway bar shouldnt give you any problems. i hear that 13mm (correct me if im wrong) is the biggest you can go without problems.

i did this on my hatch (97). there were no threads. i used a nut and bolt combo i got from Honda. ive had it on there for over a year with zero problems. But i am looking to go bigger so a subframe brace is next...

According to the USDM civic brochures, the 99 model was a 13mm, and the 00 was a 14mm

I guess I'm just too cautious maybe? I've never put any parts on my car that didn't come with the car without the extra parts to make sure I wouldn't have any problems. I care too much about my coupe to risk anything like that.

There is no risk, it's an oem part for a civic

Not here for an argument. I respect your stand on this. I just wouldn't put even an OEM rear sway bar on MY CAR without a subframe brace. While it is an OEM part for a civic, it came on an EM1, not an EJ6. But that's what makes this community so great: each person has their own way of doing things.

By the way, Deetz, I love your EM1 build. Check outmy EJ6 and let me know what you think.

lol...the EM1 and EJ6 subframe is the same thickness/construction. The EM1 rear bar is useless...it's not going to tear your subframe out even if you went rock crawling with the car.

But hey....I'm sure that subframe brace will look sweet with a brake line sized sway bar running across it.

Not hatin. Just sayin. No reason to be so "cautious with your coupe".

Well thanks for your .02... I'll be rich in no time!! Seriously though, what difference does it make to you what I do with my car? I'm very careful about where I leave it parked, road conditions when I drive it, why wouldn't I spend an extra $100-$150 for that little extra peace of mind? Just sayin...

I find it funny how you ask for help and people give you advice, since its not what you want to hear your post turn into this. You can be as careful as you want it makes no real diff. you do not need a sub brace with an OEM swaybar! If you want a reason to put a brace on your car it sounds like you will find one. I really dont care what you do its your car but no need to get all up in arms because people tell you dont need a sub frame brace. Just my .02 to add to your bank.

Man! Very insightful! I'll make sure not to start threads just to argue about in the future! Thanks... check your facts: I was not the OP of this thread. I never asked for help with this issue. I simply offered up my view on the topic (which, by the way, was on the top of page 3 with no replies yet) and all of a sudden, everyone has something to say.
I don't "want a reason to put a brace on my car" or else it would already have one, without a rear sway bar... just because it looks 'mad tyte with my LCAs yo!' So here's a refund on your .02, because it was worthless to me.

do this, exactly what i did over a year ago. the holes are slightly larger for the cars that came with sway bars at the factory, they would install a threaded insert looks kinda like a nut welded to the back side. you find many many holes in your like this.

10mm bolts, (4 of them) and then 4 lock nuts. Take the bracket that goes to the subframe, you will need to drill it out slightly to fit the new bolt.

Then bolt everything in. This is exactly how I did mine a year ago with no problems.
