Default Rear Main Seal question

My brother had a clutch job done about a month ago, and they did not replace the rear main seal. The Del Sol has 165K on the engine should he be worried? I don't know much about rear main seals do they leak or blow out? Every time I replace a clutch I replace the seal, I told him I don't know why the shop did not go a head and replace it. I wanted to ask you guys on your opinions.

Normally they just get old and hard and start leaking, i've never really seen one just blow out.

if its really old and u over fill it with oil it could begin to leak if its old. i know i bought a motor form a junk yard and did this once and once it started leaking it wouldn't stop. shame a 8 dollar seal was leaking about a quarts of oil a day to work and home.

At this point its hard to do anything about it. With that many miles and the age of the car I would have made it a point to have told them to change it when they did the clutch. As long as it not leaking at this point just let it go until it does or you have the time/money to do it yourself just for the peace of mind

Yeah I wish they told him too. Right now it is not leaking, he just told me because I am doing my clutch on my ranger and he seen the seal with my clutch. I think it should make it a while, he got the car at about 90k, and he has kept the oil changed and regular maintenance. Thanks everyone for replying so quick.

worst case scenario; it starts leaking tomorrow. if he can't replace the seal himself, he can at least keep watch of the oil level. he could drive around for years like that as long as the oil is kept full.

there is the off chance the leak could get bad enough to wet the clutch... so they say, but i've never seen or heard of it on these Hondas.
