Re: Rear disk brake conversion on EK.......is it worth it? (Halo)
I'm also in a 97 Hatch...and was wondering the same thing this afternoon. I even brought an old issue of SCC to read today and I saw the installation/price for the AEM rear disc kit and they said it retails for 1300+ !!! Still open to anything probably within the sub 1000 range...maybe fastbrakes will come out with something?

In my opinion it is worth the money, i would suggest some del sol rear's or maybe some off of a gsr either way you will be wanting bigger front brakes soon.If you can get all four at once that would be the best way.
I myself would stay away from AEM and go with Honda brakes and upgrade from there later it should be way cheeper also.

You need 17" rims to run any of the AEM brake stuff
And AEM is having a lot of problems with both their front and rear kits
Just get Integra or 99-00SI rear brakes for your EK. And if you are gonna do the back, you should do the rear. Your stock front brakes are 240mm(9.5in) and the integra or si brakes are 264mm(10.4in). And the rear are 264mm also. It will look kinda wierd to have bigger rear brakes then front brakes. If you went with the CTR/ITR setup, you not only get the 5th lug, but you also get 11in brakes (the biggest advantage of the 5lug setup often overlooked).
Anyway, the "gsr" swap is fairly common.
For the rear, any 94 integra(gs,rs,gsr) except for the type r(unless you want 5 lug) will work. Or from the 99-00 SI, or 96-Up civic with ABS
You will need...
Rear trailing arms w hub assembly
Rotors and calipers
Master Cylinder/Brake booster
Parking brake cables
SI or EX Proportioning valve (a lot of people skip this part, and have no complaints)
For the front from the same cars as above,
Steering Knuckle w/ Hub assembly
Rotors and Calipers
You should be able to get the full setup above for about 800 or so. But you will probably have to get the rotors turned and should get new pads.
I was able to piece mine together for less then 500 including EBC pads AND new bearings installed in the front. Just shop around

The rear swap does definately make a difference. My friend got a set from a del sol for her EK. There was an immediate difference in braking.

You can buy them at a salvage/junk yard for less then $400 a rear set. I got mine from a Del Sol Si for $200 and then $80 for 99-00 Si parking brake cables.

Integ rear brakes will also work too. Yeah it's worth the money too!!!

Re: Rear disk brake conversion on EK.......is it worth it? (Civic242)
i want to do this on my ex and i have a question. i know that the gsr and si rears are the same size but are the del sol si and the 96up w/ abs the same size as the gsr and si's? you could probably get the ex rears cheaper than the si's if they are the same size. maybe

Tell us DragII, why is it worth the money?? i think thats what he wants to know. I dont think this post was a yes or no kinda question.
More braking power
Less Fade
Easier to work on
Look Better
*HXMan: Who did 99 Si rear disc conversion along with prop valve and MC.*
BTW, I am looking for 99-00 Si parking brake cables. I hate not having a parking brake!!

it's not so much that you gain better stopping power....(but you do)
the main thing that I love about it is.....you have more BALANCE...less nose diving, less pressure on the front brakes...you have more control, and stablization...I think ALL cars should come with 4wheel disks.

Re: Rear disk brake conversion on EK.......is it worth it? (DragII)
Rear disks are
I put a set of 00 Si fronts and rears in a 92 Si HB =
Full ITR setup on 00 CX =
Booster and Master Cylinder (an porportioning valve if you can) upgrade is essential - brake line tools are $30 @ Schucks.
Look around at salvage yards, full set of rears can be had for $300ish - be sure to replace pads and turn rotors while its apart
Anyone can PM or email me if they need a hand or help.
Good Luck,
Demian

yes, makes the pedal stiffer and more responsive. I did this on my '94 hatch. Went to 13/16 from a 'teg

>>only pluses is that they DO look better and a HELL of a lot easier to work on.<<
Wow, I thought I was the only one.
IMO, unless you're into open track events, this is purely a cosmetic upgrade. My stock DX brakes with stock pads are enough to take my Hoosiers beyond the limits of traction. Once I switched to synthetic brake fluid I no long experienced any brake fade, even on looooonnnng autocross courses that the TX region SCCA is famous for. I guarantee nobody on street tires is working their brakes harder than I am at an autox. The thing is, people tend not to bleed their brakes nearly often enough. And when they do, they don't do a very good job.
As for front/rear bias, this sounds cheesy, but it's controlled easily enough with a click or two on the emergency brake if needed. It doesn't cause the pads to rub either. But, I found out that if your stock brakes are bled properly, the rears will tend to lock up first anyway.
I do hate the look of those stupid drums in back though.

I felt a difference in my hatch. I definately think it is worth it. Even more so on a daily driver being it goes through stop and go everyday.

most of ur braking is up front..no need for a front swap..but if its a fashion statement..just visit a salvage yard and see if u can pick up a set of GSR s, front and rear

Re: Rear disk brake conversion on EK.......is it worth it? (deepnite)
my stock cx brakes fade like crazy. Coming to a stop from 90mph, i got major fade about half way into it. I had to press as hard as I could and they didn't lock, and I had to downshift into 2nd then 1st to keep from blowing through the light.
Everything is oem, and they are bleed properly. They work fine for regular driving, but anytime I come to a fairly fast stop, they fade. They dont get spongy, they just fade. I would expect this if I was at an auto-x or road race, but not from one stop.
As soon as I get my ebc pads from fastbrakes, my complete gsr brake swap is going in!
