Default Rear brake drum removal - easy????

My ride is a 1997 Civic - DX.

I just want to check the wear on the brake shoes. Is it easy to remove the drum. Any special tools needed? Any tips on removal would be appreciated. Is there an inspection slot someplace?

Should come off with a few taps with a mallet.

Don't pull up on the hand brake of course.

Standard is 4.0 mm but you can get away with anything above 2.0 mm.

This is for the lining, not the shoe.

Also, measure the diameter of the drum itself, these wear out aswell.

Standard is 180 mm but you can still run it if below 181 mm.

Thanx ......

I do remember watching mechanics whack the drums with a heavy hammer, but that was on US cars. Wasn't sure if the same trick works on a Honda. Guess so.

Indeed. I actually had to use a sledgehammer to remove the drums on the rear when I needed to change the pads on my 1990 Chevy Van Custom 20.

your drums should have 2 threaded holes in them. simply thread 2 bolts in them and they push off. i believe the bolt size is 12x1.25mm turn them alternatively about a half a turn at a tiem each. i've never had to whack mine with anyhting to get them off.

oh and use a vacuum to get the brake dust, dont blow it with air.
