to get the job done cheaply you'll need new R134a service fittings, a new receiver drier (yours is probably saturated with moisture, but is not necessary) new PAG(polyalkylene glcol) oil. you wont have to install new lines because the mineral oil in the lines has saturated the line enough to support R134a and hold the charge. i would recommend to charge the vehicle to 75% of its original charge because the R134a runs at higher pressures than the R12 did. the R134a will cool the car, but it wont be as effective as R12. there is nothing you can do about that. also i recommend you invest in a vacuum pump to check the system for leaks.

I am actually about to take off my R134a conversion valves and take out the R134a to put R12 back in. Although R12 is hard to find for a recharge, its still out there and it works better in these cars which have full R12 AC components. Isn't there a way we can get R134a components and then we can use R134a and get it as cold as it would with R12?

yes there is... Honda sells a full retro fit kit.... the down side is that it is not cheap.... it replaces all the lines, TXV and receiver drier. im not sure about the compressor, ill find out. but it works like a new system.

Do you think its worth it, or better to just use R12?

Right now I am running the cheap retro fit. I am using R134a with the original R12 system. So I'm using that valve adapter. My A/C isn't good during the day when its hot. Its only cold at night when theres no sun beating down on the vents. My A/C guy tried to get my A/C down to around 60 degrees, where he likes it, and it was impossible to do given my R134a with the R12 system, he said. So he recommended recharging with R12 freon when I could to get down to the colder temperatures.

get rid of that A/C guy... 60 degrees is a very very hot vent temp... your looking for 34-40 degrees out of the vents... its possible with a retrofit to achieve that temps but its all in the charge... high side pressure should be around 150-230 psi in normal "full sun" and low side around 15-50 psi... a cheap gauge set is necessary for diagnosis.

I meant that he was trying for around 60 at least! He usually makes his customers A/C out of the vents around 40. But usually you can only achieve low 40s or 30s out of newer cars. My car was basically not even getting below 80. I don't know why. He said part of the reason is my R134a freon in an R12 A/C system. Plus, once its sunny and my car is outside the sun just over powers my vents for some reason. The vents on EG hatches are placed at a pretty bad angle where sun beats right down on it from the windshield. My cars A/C only feels like 60 and maybe lower at night.

Are you positive you can get an R12 system on an EG to around 40 degrees out of the vents in the full sun using R134a freon?

R12s not that hard to find. My A/C technician has 4 cans of R12 waiting for me. He is charging me 30 bucks a can. I think the car only uses 3 cans. Over the winter when I go back to Miami I will have the R12 put on and my cheap R134a retrofit adapters taken off. If my temps don't hit at least high 40s, there is something wrong. And if just the freon type causes a 40 degree temp difference, then wow, I am amazed.
