Qustion about tranny

My transmission is acting up. It happens when I am at high rpm's, I am cruizing at high rpm's and I shift quickly into second gear and I get a grind sound. It's not horrible but you can definatley hear it. It still goes into gear fine but sounds awful. Do you think changing the transmission oil would help? Or should I just get an ex tranny and get rid of the crappy dx one? How much do ex tranny's go for? Lastly is uprgrading dx tranny to ex tranny a worthwhile upgrade?

Sounds like synchros. Just get an EX, believe me. I swapped one in and it's so much funner to drive my car, not to mention shaving like a half second just from a new tranny. https://honda-tech.com/forums/images/smilies/emthup.gif

CX and DX trannys suck!!!!! Get an EX if you can. My CX does that noise in high rpm's when i shift into second. https://honda-tech.com/forums/images...s/emthdown.gif

CX transmissions aren't even in the same class as a DX transmission. The VX/CX have the same gear ratios and the LX/DX have another gear ratio. All 4 transmissions are really long geared, but the VX/CX are even longer than the LX/DX.

You can swap out a 1992-2000 Honda Civic EX transmission. 1992-1995 come from the D16Z6 equipped Civics like the EX Coupe and Sedan and the Si Hatchback. The 1996-2000 EX transmission comes from the D16Y8 equipped Civics, which are the EX Coupe and Sedan, and is geared EXACTLY the same as the 1992-1995 version, but these have stronger shift forks which last longer than the D16Z6 forks. All 1992-2000 EX transmissions will bolt onto your D-Series block without modifications, straight plug and play.

IMO, get the D16Y8 EX transmission. Better shift forks, and most of the time, less mileage on the transmission due to the fact that it's newer.

You can bandage that grind for now though. Go to your local GM Dealer and pick up some GM Synchromesh Friction Modified manual transmission fluid. Usually, clears up any grinds you may have. When was the last time you changed your fluid? Either way, go with OEM Honda MTF or GM/Pennzoil Synchromesh (Pennzoil makes the GM fluid). Bought some today, filling her up tomorrow.

When you get the new tranny, call up Gear Speed and get the carbon coated synchros that will fit into the Y8 tranny. I have them in my tranny and have yet to have a problem going into gear on hard shifts!

I doubt he's looking to tear apart his "new" transmission to replace internal components. Jut looking for something to plug and play, probably.

Well, what's not to say the used tranny wont grind worse! I bought a used tranny that had a "slight grind" per the seller, and a couple months later I tore it apart and the whole fucking thing was fried to all hell!

If you buy a used tranny, beware, its easier to pull it apart before swapping it in and then finding out later what kind of condition its actually in.

It could be syncros, or since you said that it occurs when you shift fast into second, it could be that you are shifting faster then the tranny. What kinda car do you have and what motor? and also get a ex tranny.
