Default Quik Q: Are hub-centric rings needed for my Rotas?

The shop I got the wheels from said hub-centric rings weren't needed for my Rota Group N's (15X6.5) that were going onto my 2000 Civic. Then again, he didn't even know what the hell hub-centric rings were until I brought one from home and showed him.

So do I need them? Anyone using them? Anyone not using them? (BTW: The center bore in the wheel is larger than the section of the hub the wheel slips over.)

Thanks!

get them now, unless you don't mind retorquing your lug nuts every 100 miles, and having vibrations at highway speed. you need them because: without them, the stresses the wheel encounters will transfer to the 4 wheel studs, rather than to the hub like it's supposed to.

http://www.prestigewheel.com has good polycarbonate ones that wont melt or sieze on the hub for $40 shippped. the hub diameter is 56.15mm and the center bore of your rotas should be on the box - i believe it's 71 or 72 mm.

Is that true for the 15x7 slipstreams? i bought some with 56.1 bore.

Manila Auto Tech in San Bruno. The person I was specifically dealing with was Carlitio.

Thanks for the replies and thank you jwn7 for the link. I'm hoping Carlito will come through when I ask him to get the rings though, because $40 is too much to pay when I feel that the rings should have been included with the wheels in the first place.

$40!?! You can get them for $20 direct from Cosmic in Hayward. It's Rota's distributer.

John, I'll have to disagree with you on this. When the nuts are torqued down, the vertical load isn't being carried by the lugs themselves. Instead it is the friction between the rotor hat and the wheel's mounting surface that bears the majority of the load.

If the load were being carried by the rings, they certainly wouldn't be available in plastic. The main purpose of the rings is to aid in centering during wheel installation. However, the tapered lug nuts that Rotas require provide their own centering action. When properly torqued in sequence, there shouldn't be any vibration or other problems.

Also, FWIW, the front wheels (OEM) on my QX4 aren't hub-centric.

well, you're probably right. that's just what the guy at the tire shop told me when he balanced my wheels. he seemed to know what he was talking about, i was just repeating what he had told me. i ran them without the rings for a few weeks, and there was some vibration at highway speeds. i got the rings, and the vibrations were gone.

Interesting. I never had a single problem with my Slipstreams without rings. Are/were you using the stock acorn lug nuts or did you buy tapered nuts for them?

Lug nuts should always be torqued in a "criss-cross" pattern as illustrated below:

Same here. I use Rota C8s with no hubcentric rings. I asked a guy at a tire shop about them, and he said I didn't need them. Turns out I don't. I don't have any vibrations and don't need to re-torque my lugs every 100 miles like someone above said. No problems and it's been about 5500-6000 miles of both fast freeway driving and lots of city driving.

Yeah, I wouldn't think the wheel manufactures would choose plastic if the ring was meant to be exposed to a lot of stress. Also, there only appears to be a 5mm intersection/overlap between the hub snout (or hub lip, or whatever it's called) and the hub-centric ring (if it were installed). I'm surprised at the mixed responses but now I feel a little more assured about not using the rings. Thanks to all for input.

what is the purpose of doing the criss cross pattern when tightening them?

so it could center itself

i had the rings on there for a few miles then when i did my suspension, i lost them on accident. i went to a tire place and they said i didnt need it. i torque my wheels correctly with a torque wrench ( which everyone needs, $25 craftsmans one at sears is all you need to keep everything safe ).i have a bit of vibration but only at 80+ and is very minimal, i must add that i DO have warped rotors. not sure if the absence of rings is helping or making it worse. im swapping out for GSR discs all around tomorrow so ill be able to tell if the vibrations go away with the new brakes or is its still there because of the "no ring".

Its to properly disperse the load on the mounting surface, and prevent warping the rotor/hub assembly.
