quick suspension question please help!
do i need a spring compressor to install my ground control coilovers and tokico illuminas???

are you on stock springs? if this is your first time, i would suggest a spring compressor. i usually lay in on the grass with a towel wrap around it so it wont shoot out and i just use the compressor gun and shoot it. but i wouldnt suggest this if this is your first time..

well just rent the compressor and use it to take the factory springs out. you dont have to use the compressor when putting on the new setup back on.

i want to install it tonight....
why do i need the spring compressor for stock part removal?
just never removed stock springs before....
i consider myself a fairly competent mechanic... i mean i do that (mostly) for a living soooo

i dont know if you have done it yet, but you need the compressor to get the stock upper mount off your stock shock. The spring is (compressed) in there. You usually can rent the spring compressor from like auto zone for a deposit. Then you get your deposit back when you return it.

You need a spring compressor because the stock spring is much taller then a lowered spring and therefore compressed on the strut. If you just unbolt the spring collar on top of the strut without a spring compressor then you are releasing a lot of sprung tension which could be dangerous.
Now when you put the stuff back together with the new lower springs, you usually do not have to compress the spring to get the spring collar, washer, and nut on because the spring is much shorter and lower then the factory spring.
My Progress Auto springs actually spin freely on the strut until the car is placed on the ground, then it compresses.

Yah you should use a spring compressor. But I didn't have one when I did mine, nor could I find any. I took two tires, butted them together. Then I placed the air gun on the bolt to release the springs. Then I took the shock/spring/airgun and butted it up between the tires, then TOOK the nut off. You estially(sp) shoot the spring into the tires. It kinda jumps off. You have to becareful and its probably unsafe what I did..

For the record, i did it just fine WITHOUT a spring compressor
taking the stock parts off was kinda fun.
