Inspect before you buy.

Check for CEL codes and warning lights in cluster.
Check for oil leaks.
Replace engine oil and transmission fluid.
Do a full ignition system tune up.
Replace water pump, tensioner, and timing belt if there is no record of this work being done.

depending on the mileage, I would consult the owners manual if you can find it on google. It tells you what to expect at what mileage. Buying a car? I'm sure any mechanic shop can do a 42-point inspection check.
