Questions about d15z1..
Hey guys, ive got a few questions.. ..i might be getting a 94 hatch with a d15z1 in it with like 20k miles on...my questions are what are my options for getting alittle bit more "go" without doing a swap, yes i know a swap would be the best solution but thats not in my budget atm..Would it be worth doing a head swap on it, like a y8 or something too get some more hp? What would it be around with a y8 or z6 head on the z1 block? Right now its got an intake, header, and a good exhaust system on it..So what are my options? And are they REALLY that slow stock? Its a 5 speed as well..Any input would help! Thanks guys!

yes they are that slow stock the transmission on those engines were so longggggg geared...but that was for a reason MPG. you can swap a z6 or y8 head onto it but from my calculations even with a thinner gasket you are looking at like 8:1 compression ratio and you will have problems with dogs out running you.
with that being said drive it what it was made for the gas mileage if the engine is in a vx hatchback they were rated over like 45mpg back n the day

Re: Questions about d15z1.. (sohctodohc)
Hmm alright, well i read a guy ran his d15z1 at the track stock, and ran 18.1...i ran a 16.8 in my 93 coupe with a d16z6, so really 1.3 seconds slower isnt that bad..i dont think the car itself is a vx, its just the motor from one, and the guy who has it told me its got short gearing so then that would mean its not the vx tranny which has long geared..Whats the downside too that compresion?? Will i get at all of an hp increase from putting a z6 or y8 head on the d15z1 block? I just cant decide if i want too trade my car for his or not....

Well i know this is TOTALLY my doings but i want your guy's opinions..
Should i trade my white 93 ex for his red 94 (unsure model, vx motor with around 20k miles on motor.)
Mine: Intake, header, not so good exhaust..custom ricer interior, no HEAT, no windshield wipers, no air, no powersteering, 18"s, new tires, bodykit, shaved, dropzone/skunk 2 susp, bad clutch.
His: intake, header, good exhuast, brand new 16" gold konigs with brand new tires, good susp, short throw, in dash cd/dvd player, stock body, i keep my stock headlights, he keeps the black proj.
(thats all the major stuff)

id say go for the trade, and maybe see if you can find a z6 longblock, that would be pretty cheap and easy to swap, yes its a swap but its within even a tight budget if you do it yourself
but thats just me, i love hatches.

Re: (Cryabandonship)
Thanks alot for the input bro, yeah im more than likely going too im just having some doubts..but mine..has no heat, no windshield wipers, no a/c, no power steering, bad clutch, and im starting too like hatches too =D..only major thing thats stoping me is that motor...Im sure i could sell that motor for some decent money since its only got like 20k miles on it, and then save up some money and throw a b series in it..Ive also go a 90 ls integra that i could sell, i bought the for winter as my civic doesnt have heat, but the red hatch does =D

Re: (Vtec Civic 93)
plain and simple answer.....to the mini-me no dont do it it would be a waste of every single penny you would put into it. the z1 engines arent worth anything(dont get me wrong it is a awesome and reliable motor but to the enthusiast its no more than a gas getting motor.) unless you find someone that is on a quest for the highest mpg he can get.
im not sure on him saying it is short geared, i think the vx tranny is omething like:
1-40 or 45
2- 70 ish
3-115 ish
and so on
the ex\si is
1-35
2-60
3-90
and so on
from the looks of your original car and the hatch if i was you i would get it in a heartbeat even if it cant pass a garbage truck(sorry i hate bodykits and shaved moldings and all that)

Re: (sohctodohc)
Yea, Mini me is a no no on a VX block
I have a 92 CX D15B8 minime with a Y8 head (Thats getting parted out right now, going B-series)
and with a 7800RPM redline, my shifts at 7500rpm are 55mph, 83mph, and 3rd is supposed to end at 155 due to the gearing....
