Questions about Cam Gears & Cam Shafts
So I've been looking into adjustable[/U] Cam gears and Camshafts for a first generation b16a Vtec, I'm planning on turbo-ing it some keep that in mind.
I've heard a lot about Skunk2 cam gears and how they are really responsive.
I have also heard a lot about Blox camshafts and cam gears.
I'm a 'newby' on the topic.
could you guys give me some insight on the topic?

I'm just looking for insight, or 'a point in the right direction' of what I should be looking at, and what to stay away from.

Re: Questions about Cam Gears & Cam Shafts
i can tell you you'll want a turbo cam shaft.
ask this question in the FI forum. since you want turbo you might as well start there.
how exactly is a cam gear responsive? its connected to the cam shaft. whats it responding to?
never touch blox anything. unless you don't care about your car or you wanna be cheap.

Re: Questions about Cam Gears & Cam Shafts
I guess the point I'm making is what is the end goal? What kind of power are you looking to make? What kind of turbo build are you contemplating? Are you planning to build the block or keep it stock?
A lot of questions you need to answer before you can get an answer to yours.

Re: Questions about Cam Gears & Cam Shafts
well this tells me I need to do more research.
I appreciate the help. I guess I'm jumping too far ahead.
What do you recommend for a turbo kit? I am aiming for a little above 300whp.
I'm glad you guys looked at my post, considering when I am reading other threads you two are the ones with the most advanced knowledge that I have seen so far. Let me know.
Also I am thinking of boreing out the block and fitting it with new pistons. I also have an option for a b18b1 block, but i'm not sure If i should use it or not.

Check out GoAutoworks. One of the basic kits would fit the bill. If you want to try and get it cheaper piece together a build based on that.
Stock B-series blocks can handle 300hp stock.

I'll give it a look! Thanks for the help.
In your opinion, would you rebuild the b18b1 block? or would you stick with the b16?

Re: Questions about Cam Gears & Cam Shafts
Most people are using a CTR/ITR cam profile for turbo cars. The biggest cam you want to go with will be a Skunk2 Pro 1 or similar. You don't really want to use a Turbo cam as they aren't really worth the money. A GSR cam is a good choice if you can find some used as they are cheap and has a profile that is better than a "turbo cam" which most turbo cams are based off.
If you were to build your turbo on the stock B16 I would go with the GSR/ITR cam. If you were going to build the B18 I would opt for the Pro 1. This all depends on the powerband you are looking for and the turbo selection.

pro1's are only for larger turbos. your run of the mill 50/57/60 trim would not work well with pro1s.

Re: Questions about Cam Gears & Cam Shafts
Just clearing things up, if I went with a 60 trim, and the b18b1 I should just hunt for some GSR/ITR cams instead of buying aftermarket?
I know the whole story with the GSR cams, that they aren't really necessary unless you're boosting, and when you do turbo the car theres a huge difference compared to the b16 camshaft and the GSR cam shaft. I read for awhile on that.
Correct me if I'm wrong.

Re: Questions about Cam Gears & Cam Shafts
Yes. If you are going LS VTEC that would be a good choice.
The exception to this would be to use a turbo cam with the LS head as you can't use a GSR/ITR VTEC cam with that head.

Re: Questions about Cam Gears & Cam Shafts
B18b1 block with B16a 1st gen head.
Correct?
And run turbo cams.
Sorry I'm new to the LS Vtec idea.

Re: Questions about Cam Gears & Cam Shafts
nah if your gonna turbo it just stick with the LS head. turbo cam that head and have fun.
yes thats one option. really any vtec head works. then use b18b1/b20 blocks(if youre not in cali).
you can switch and run a turbo LS vtec but eh vtec when you have that much power wont matter too much. have to build the bottom better though either way.

Re: Questions about Cam Gears & Cam Shafts
You already seemed a lil confused and I hope this won't confuse you any more.
Most people don't run turbo cams with vtec. Turbo cams are more for non-vtec motors. It used to be that everyone just used GSR cams for vtec turbo set-ups. Now it's been proven that cams like ITR and more aggressive cams like Skunk2 make more power with turbo set-ups. That being said Crower makes an aggressive cam for non-vtec non-turbo motors that might be worth looking at if you were going to turbo the car without the vtec head.

Re: Questions about Cam Gears & Cam Shafts
Okay, I understand now.
I'm going to see if I can ****** that integra from a buddies place this week, or within the next month. Space is the only problem, I should be able to work it out. And I'll take a look at the Skunk2 website and see what they have.
I really appreciate the help. If there is anything you guys want to add in the future feel free to post it here or PM me. Thanks again.
