questions??????????
ok first question i am wondering how to get my cam/valves in the position they would be at TDC because, i am putting a new timing belt on while i have that side of the engine torn apart. there are 3 dash marks on the cam gear but i dont know what they mean
second question i am putting my main pully back on the crank but the crank has a notch in it where it looks like something would slide in, and the pully also has a notch in it i will put pics up shortly to clear this up a little but if any one knows what im talking about is there supposed to be something i need to put in there or what?
thanks in advanced

Here is one for a b series motor. Not sure what you have but you can look for another application if you dont have a b series.

Re: (rbanke)
i removed the old one before setting it to tdc i dont know why i didnt do it ahead of time but now i just need to find out how to set it so i wont bend my valves i know when you need to do this to a 4G63 DSM engine there is a little dash mark on each cam gear and you just set them to 12 oclock and then set the engine to TDC so i was wondering if theres something like this i have to do

I'd be VERY wary of moving the cam independantly from the crank... You're going to contact the pistons...
If everything was set right when you took it apart then just put it back together as is... roll it to TDC (as per the mark on the crank pully) and then just double check the timing marks on the cam and crank to ensure they're both properly lined up...
But I certainly would go moving the cam w/o moving the crank at the same time.

Re: (PurpleEKHatch)
so lets say im putting a new head on my car then how would i set the valves/cam to the correct position so that i wouldnt be hitting the pistons on the valves. i know this can be done, and to find tdc you dont need to put a screw driver in the sparkplug hole touching the piston all you have to do is take the plug out of the #1 cylinder and turn it over with a socket and you will hear the compression escaping through the plug hole and then you know your at tdc but anyways i know there is a way to do this so if any one else has any ideas i would like to hear them

what are the cam marks supposed to be at? my cam gear has 3 lines on it if that helps

Re: (specscow)
There are 2 possibilities so I'm not giving them... lol.
You NEED to get a manual. a HELMS manual. I've seen at least 3 examples of published manuals that had incorrect info in regards to cam timing marks.
IF you were putting a new head on then you would line the crank up to TDC and then line up your cam timing marks as well. THEN put it together.
Since it's already together if you turn the cam you will most likely end up contacting a piston... now granted you will feel this happen and it would take a pretty oafy dude to actually end anything... but it's not worth the risk.
What engine do you have... I will look up the alignment marks when I go home if you want. But I'd HIGHLY recomend seperating the head before moving the cam independantly of the crank...
Also keep in mind that if the engine ran when you took it apart and you did NOT turn the crank or the cam then it's all alredy aligned... only chance of being off would be a tooth in either direction which should cause contact... and in that case anyway you can just put the belt on and turn the crank to the TDC position then re-check your cam gear timing marks.
MOST of the d series engines have 3 lines and the one towards the front is supposed to be level with the top of the head... but the z6 and MAYBE the JDM motor use slightly different alignment...
My dealership set my timing incorrectly when I first got my car (no access to a shop at that point and didn't want to do my timing belt myself). I drove it for like 60k w/o ANYONE ever being like "hey this car seems kinda sluggish" ... then when I did my timing belt I set it right and the car SCREAMED in comparisson.
Post what engine you have and I'll look up the timing marks... just be careful.

theres 4 marks on the crank pulley, the 3 close together then 1 about an inch away, thats tdc, theres a little notch on the block that you will line that up with, then on the cam gear it says "UP" put that straight up and thats TDC

Re: (schardbody)
The main question is; Did you move anything (cam or crank) after you took off the belt? You never said you replaced the head. At least I don't remeber you saying that. But if you didn't replace the head, just put the belt back on. You'll be fine.
