Default Question about vtec

Hey everyone I'm new to the site and I have a question or two about vtecs.

I'm looking at this civic on craig's list:
http://milwaukee.craigslist.org/cto/1254403445.html

Now to start off I know almost nothing when it comes to cars and I figured why not ask you guys.

As you can see it says that the vtec is not hooked up. How long would it take to hook this up? How hard is it? Could someone that doesn't know anything about cars follow instructions on how to do it?

And last of all why does a vtec exactly do?
I've read up on it and I guess is opens valves of some sort at a certain time?

Any help would be appreciated thanks a lot .

All over the internet.Long story short, when VTEC crosses over, intake valves open with more lift and duration on single cam motors, both intake and exhaust valves open with more lift and duration on dual cams.

Its not hard to wire vtec, its only 3 wires i believe, two is going to the ecu the other one, is is ground. heres a couple link about wiring it.

Here is what vtec is.

To hook up, Or Wire in VTEC isnt hard or time comsuming at all, Youll need A connector for the VTEC solenoid and The VTEC pressure switch.
For the solenoid you will need a 1 wire connector and the Pressure switch a 2 wire connector, One is ground. Honda uses those connectors in various spots so theyre not hard to come by. Then youll need to run those wires to Pins on the ECU.

Here,

Youll also need a P28 ECU which run around a 100 dollars and is super easy to change from the PO5 Using the po5 isnt the best idea being that the fuel maps arent correct for that motor, Or the Redline.

VTEC is Variable timing and Electronic lift control.
Basically When you reach above a certain RPM a hydraulically actuated pin to link up adjacent rocker arms. There are bigger cam lobes that have a "wilder" profile to hold the intake valves open for a longer time to create more power.

Certain trim models came with VTEC, EX.SI, Others didnt, DX.CX.

It would run the car and probably wouldnt hurt it if you arent bringing the Rpm's way up,
I would still get a OBDI P28 ECU and wire in VTEC.

VTEC opens the valves further at a set point, for best power/motor efficiency. think of it like an exhaust. stock power mixes with stock piping well, but when you get more power, doesn't it make sense to open it up a bit? but on a stock motor, large piping hurts performance

the valves are doing the same thing. they are limiting the airflow in a good way, until the motor is revving higher, requiring more airflow. the VTEC solenoid uses oil pressure to help determine proper engagement, then the cam profile is changed so the valves are opening further for more air, thus more power

Reading the ad, it says its using dohc ZC pistons. these are dome shaped pistons that raise the compression. not only does that increase power, but it kinda pushes the need to tune the motor. the higher compression can cause detonation, though if everything else is stock (no decking of the block, head isnt shaved) you should be okay.

grab a P28 off ebay for 100 bucks or so. match it with your transmission, in this case manual.
