Question About The Transmission
Hey guys, I have a question about the transmission problem. Last week, my aunt who retired & moved to another country sold me her 1993 Civic sedan with a manual transmission for $200. It has 170K miles on it.
There is a noise coming out from the transmission. It's somewhat like whirring or growling noise. The noise comes out when the engine idling, gear in neutral, & my foot off the clutch pedal. Once I press the clutch all the way, the noise is completely gone. The noise also comes out when I'm driving & right after I get into 1st & 2nd gear.
Someone told me that it might be the throw out bearings. Could that be it? But if it's the throw out bearing, wouldn't the noise comes out when I press the clutch pedal?
Any advice guys? Thanks a lot guys.

Is it true that I heard that this is the common problems for most 1992-2000 Civic with manual tranny?
B20 EJ6, thanks for your quick reply. I appreciate that. Wouldn't throw bearing make noise when I press the clutch pedal all the way? Or is it the opposite?

ummmm, no. If it goes away when he pushes the clutch in, then it is a bearing inside the tranny, the Input shaft bearing to be exact. This bearing is probably the culprit. To change it involves opening the tranny and pulling the gears out. There is a DIY in the FAQ, and I did it personally. Not really too hard if you dont mind busting the tranny open. DONT let a shop do it for you, as they will charge you out the ***. If you dont do it yourself, then just buy a different tranny, it will cost less then letting the shop do it.

Thanks guys for your fast reply. How much is the input shaft bearing cost? Just the parts. I would most likely replace them myself with a help of few friends. How long did it took you to do it sol2hatch?

Re: (HondaH22A)
it was my first time to open a tranny, and i had the luxury of having a spare tranny off my old engine, so I took my time and used my helms manual for back up. It took me a weekend of on and off work. I figure you could do it in a Saturday easily with some help and some know how. Just make sure you get the right part and everything. I asked the part counter at my dealership to get me that part, and then, just to make sure it was the same one, I went and asked the mech. out back, and the part counter had given me the wrong one. So make sure it is the right one, or you will be kicking yourself later. goodluck.

Ummmmm WRONG!! If the noise goes away when there is pressure applied to the throwout bearing, the bearing is bad. The noise will NOT go away under any action or condition, its the input shaft bearing.
Replace your clutch and throwout bearing as originally suggested.

Re: (schlit)
there is one other thing that I found on my trans it wasn't the throwout bearing or the out put shaft bearing. It was the diff the spider gears were make a bunch of noise. It could also be the pilot shaft bearing on the flywheel
