Question about SOHC cams.
I tried searching and couldnt really find out what they do. What do you buy? just cam gears or is there more? Kind of a newbie question, but i guess im still a newbie anyway. Thanks

i have already had some pretty good threds on this and there are more out ther, try d cams or somthing like that.
but anyway if i do indeed get my cam(it's backordered) it is going to be a zex stage 2 cam. they say they require the springs and retainers but thats not the case as long as you don't rev much past redline, if you get the springs then you can rev past 7500rpm but im not sure how far past though. a cam will give you better hp and tourque in the mid range and with a cam gear it can be set to higher rpm. they typically give around 6-14hp depending on your setup and current cam condition.

so i dont have to buy springs and retainers if i dont rev higher than stock redline? I dont even plan on revving any higher than about 7,300, or whatever my fuel cut-off is. How much is that Zex stage 2 ?

i had stage 2 zex czm and it was sweet. it really makes a huge difference. i would suggest springs and retainers. i only had the cam and i blew my motor.

Gude ( bullfrog ) makes some nice cams. The one I had on my previous setup was the " gorilla cam ". It required a reprogrammed ecu. I do however know someone who had that cam without the ecu and that bitch idled like it had black cats in the muffler..
pop pop pop pop... heh.. was quick too..
More nfo on gude.. click here

did you rev too high when you blew your motor? if you keep it below redline you hsould be ok without springs and retainers but to take full advantage of any cam and a cam gear will help a lot too. but if you don't have an intake yet get one of those first.

i was beating on it on the highway and was shifting every gear at 7300. it was probably my fualt i should have taken it a little easier. but now i got b series so everything worked out. my friend has the gude cam with a fully built head in a 1.7 sohc and it is alright i thing he needs some computer work
