Default question about a motor problem

"one thing wrong and its nothing serious. The car burns a lil oil through out the 3000 mile oil change...just about a half quart. Huy at inline said it was probly just a vavle seat leakin a lil bit. but when i pulled the motor i notice the cam seal was cut. that may have caused the leak so it may not even be a valve seat leaking. Even if it where it wouldnt be a seriouse thing."

If this is what is wrong with the motor is it something big?? Is it easy/cheap to fix?

What type of motor is it?

VTEC motors burn a little bit of oil when VTEC engages, so do a lot of 4 cylinder engines, actually. I've noticed the same thing with the tercel and it's stated in the manual that that's perfectly normal.

I wouldn't worry about it unless you're blowing smoke. 1/2 qt. at 3k is fine.

Alright, then it's not VTEC, so you don't really can't claim it to that.

If you wanna rebuild the engine - go for it, I'm sure you can find the problem on a breakdown. Though in all honesty 1/2 qt. per 3000 miles isn't a lot. Like I said, I've seen a few engines built in the 90's that seem to burn some oil "normally." Even if they don't - you're going through a negligible amount of oil, so I wouldn't worry about it.

If you wanna replace the cam seal go ahead - it could be the problem, though if it's coming out of there it won't be burning, it'll most likely be leaking - so you'd see it.

As for the valve seats - that's a question only a leakdown/compression test can answer.
