Default Question about mods on a 93 Civic EX

You know, as much as I am going to try not to make this a "what mods should I do first?" question, I dont think its possible. I own a '93 Civic EX and my only mod is an intake. I only have enough money right now to either put Si wheels and a 2.5" drop on my car, OR a header and full 2.5" exhaust. What would be the more practical thing to do?

Thanks for the suggestions!

well, what do you hate looking at more, the stock exhaust or the stock hubcaps?

I would recommend the 'drop' first. However, what type of suspension are you thinking of putting on your car?

springs that drop your **** 2.5" nooo way! and 2.5" is too big of an exhaust for a D unless you plan on boosting

anyways id get the rims and drop it like its hot AND run open axel back so you get the noise of an exhaust

ps.....im serious

I would invest in some suspension goodies before anything else. Wheels don't make you go faster.

such as? and wheels will make you go faster when they have wider tires on them, and the tires you have are the width of your hand and 700 tread wear

well, if you could get wheels, GOOD tires, GOOD shocks and GOOD springs, id go that route personally.

BTW, a lil off topic, a cheap mod you could do for power is to put a b-series TB on your car. A buddy of mine put one on his turbo-d, made a huge difference, and i'd be interested to see if i does anything for a stock one.

Well, you can nab one off an ls, because its the same diameter as the other b series (exc. R)....At a junkyard, i dunno what it would cost.

The kid that my buddy got his from thought that since it was from an LS it was useless, so he got it for free

Be patient and save up to buy things that actually matter. That's my suggestion. But what it comes down to, of course, is what your plans are for the car. Are you looking to build a weekend-trackcar? Showcar? What?

IMO, performance should come first. But if you're the type of person who is into the cosmetic aspect primarily, then just do that for the time being, and don't waste money on minor bolt-ons like Intake/Header/Exhaust which won't really give you much more additional power, especially in relation to how much money you'll be spending on those things.

If you're about performance then just do that for the time being and don't waste money on heavy SI wheels or some half-*** suspension just so it "looks" aggressive. Instead, spend the money on building your D internals, or piece together a turbo kit, or slap some suspension on there that actually improves the handling and traction of your car, or save up for a swap you can afford.

IMO, if you have a small budget, you can't focus on both cosmetic and performance at the same time without half-assing one aspect or the other. It's better to just focus on one for the time being. Example, drop your Civic 2.5" with Neuspeed springs on stock shocks = Good-looking car, but it'll only be a matter of time before your stock shocks give out and when you hit a bump in an intersection you'll be bounching up and down while everyone stares and laughs.

to save yourself some headache go with a complete coil over suspension instead of just springs or coil overs with different shocks ( unless you go with good shocks) save your self some hassle as taking springs apart is no fun. you could run 2 1/4 in. piping to your stock muffler if you want some sound. ( some folks don't like the sound) muffler shop should be able to do that fairly cheap, will rob a little bit of top end. good luck with the d series.

Thanks, I'm trying to build a car thats decently fast, sleeper style (hence Si wheels) I just didnt know that lowering springs didnt help th handling. The car is my primary transportation. I have been tossing the idea around of piecing together a turbo kit, but I"m not sure exactly where to look. Thats what I would really like to do actually, I would be fine with a 14b setup if I could find all of the pieces for a decent price. Any other suggestions anybody?

They do. A lower car = a lower center of gravity, which generally means improved handling. But this is what I was referring to- Especially if you just put some cheap springs on there on stock shocks. The ride could potentially be so bouncy as to be dangerous when cornering.

I would always advise spending money on handling if you don't have teh cash flow to get a swap right now. There are some great sway bar and coil over kits for pretty reasonable prices. I'm sure you can find a set of used Tien SS's for somewhere around 700.

I agree. If you want to head down the road toward performance, suspension can be a great place to start depending on your preferences. Despite having a low-power engine, you can still have a hell of a time with your car if it can handle very well.

Take the Lotus Elise, for example.

Its a blast to have a car that you can really sling around curves....plus its nice for scaring the **** out of folks that ride with you. Not that I would ever do that.........

See, but the thing is, this IS a "what should I do next to my car" thread.

It's your decision, it's your money.
