Question about LSD and stock Honda's.
Ok, well me and my stepfather were having a disagreement the other day. It was about a couple things. LSD's and why they are needed on everyday cars, and also about my stock 95 Honda Civic.
Alright, he was saying to me how all cars must have an LSD stock because when turning the distance the outside tire is going is further than the inside tire. He also said that some earlier cars did not come LSD stock and had a chirping noise because of this, hence the reason he believes all cars have them stock.
I thought that he made a very good point but I gave him my point as well in saying that I thought all Honda's did not come with a factory LSD, because why would Honda say they have LSD's on some cars (ITR) but not on all.
Can someone explain to me how when you go around a turn, without an LSD, why the inside tire does not make a screech sound(Actually I wouldn't know what the sound is )?
Thanx

Cars must have a DIFFERENTIAL not a Limited slip differential. But just a differential.
LSDs simply prevent a single tire spinning in the mud by Locking the two together after one starts to spin.
Your Civic does not have a LSD it has a simple differential. Which allows the two tires to spin at different rates of speed like he stated, he just had his terms messed up.

Anytime, if you check out http://www.howstuffworks.com they have a great write up not only on how they work but the different kinds as well.

a stock civic has an open differential. there are many different types and that how stuff works article names them all but after reading it a couple of times im still not sure how any of them besides the clutch-type works. but most stock cars dont have or need an lsd because honestly whats the point. a lot of four wheel drive cars that when switched into four wheel drive they have a locking differential which is what would cause the tires to chirp or jump a little around corners because they are traveling different distances but at the same speed. hence when an open differential is the norm
