Question about gear ratio's hoping someone can shed some light for me.
Okay so let's take 2 different trannys.
1)USDM 94-00 hydro GS-R tranny
2)USDM 1997-2001 ITR tranny
Now let's say they both have the same exact redline on the engine 8500rpm.
Okay so both trannys are in 2nd gear and you push the car to redline(8500) and shift to 3rd gear now when the shift is made the RPM's are gonna drop obviously.
So my question is which tranny's RPM's are gonna drop lower after the shift to 3rd gear??
Now logical to me would be the GSR tranny would drop lower since it's got longer gears and since the ITR tranny has shorter gears it wouldn't drop off as much when you shift.
Am I correct in assuming that or am I totally messed up and not thinking straight??
Sorry if this is at all confusing just really interested. TIA

is this true??
i have a b18c1 and when i shift @8200 it drops to exactly to 6000
if i get the b16 tranny and shift at 8200 will the next gear drop higher than 6000? like aroung 6200-6500??

i dont know the exact specs of the trannies you mentioned. but it all depends on the size of the gears you use. they arent always 100% proportionate. if they are all proportionate then they will always drop the same rpm like u mentioned. but you could have a 3rd gear be a bit longer than your 2nd. then youre rpm drop will be more.

Re: Question about gear ratio's hoping someone can shed some light for me. (megotvtec)
well if you want to do themath you can figure that out. cant say im interested in goin threw it all myself.
its been awhile since i did this in school so bare with me if i screw up.
just put whatever theoretical rpm you want in the equation. say 8000rpm from first to second. so just write out the equation (3.230/8000) X (1.9/x ) then cross multiply and divide. which is (8000x1.9)/3.230= 4705rpm
the equation seems right to me. but the answer doesnt seem like a real life scenario. maybe someone can correct me if i screwed up. anyway, it looks right to me. so u should be able to do this same equation with the b16 tranny. and that will tell you the difference in rpm drop between the 2 trannies. but looking at the numbers right now. i can tell you that they will be different.

if i knew the exact specs i could help ya. but i dont. gear ratios are easy to figure out though. you just put your driven gear divided by your drive gear. except in a tranny youll have 2 fractions that youll have to multiply. you have to take the main countershaft driven gear over the input shft gear. multiplied by the gear you want to figure out, over the countershaft gear driving it.
hope that all makes sense. its alot easier than it sounds.

Re: Question about gear ratio's hoping someone can shed some light for me. (megotvtec)
your gear ratios should all stay the same. except your 5th gear. your final drive will not affect your tranny gear ratios. only your countershaft in the tranny or swapping individual gears would change that.
and to know the 5th gear ratio. id have to know the number of countershaft teeth for 5th gear in the b16 tranny and the number of teeth on the 5th gear.
but with that FD it should give you more top end with your gears. and that ls 5th would give you even more top speed.
