Default question about coolant temp gauge

my gauge for my coolant temp has been reading really low (think it my be the coolant temp sensor) ever since i put my engine in (most of the time it barely if off the cool mark on the gauge). but sometimes it will go up to close to the middle (where my old civic normally operated). is this in any way normal i just though it could contribute to my horrible gas mileage (runs rich). BTW its a 94 EX with the D16Z6

Wow almost sound like there is no thermostat in there. Temp sensors do not go out often. Have you tried changing the stat out? It is a cheap part that alot of people overlook that can cause some serious damage.

One other thing I did recall was if ever I was low and there was an air bubble in there it, the gauge would act funny. Have you bled the cooling system for air bubbles?

I agree with the post above. Sounds like either no thermostat ot yout thermostat is phucked. You can get one for like $10 with gasket.

If both hoses are hot, it means that the stat is working and the car is circulation coolant...as it should.

I might suggest finding out what stat you put in. Maybe make sure the stat is the correct heat range. Also make sure you put in the rubber gasket. Without it... water could leak past the stat.

I am amazed since it says you in Texas and it has to be hot out there. But it does almost sound like the car is not getting warm enough to get out of cold start so it would be running rich. Not matter what you are gonna need to jump in there and see what is going on no matter what. If you have the old motor it would not hurt to pull the sensor off it and swap it. No sense in buying a new one when you may have one there that works.

to bleed it take off the rad cap and put the heater on hot start the car let it run for 2 fan cycles or till the heater is blowing hot air. Sounds like a t-stat just becuese it is new does not mean it is not broke. part stores give the wrong things in packages and sometimes they give deffective items.
