question about 98 civic stock head unit and keyless entry...
well, my sister has a 98 civic w/ no radio and she cant use the keyless entry until she gets a stock head unit. i tested it with my friends stock radio from his 96 civic and the keyless entry was functional on my sisters car.
i was planning to buy a OEM cd player, but was wondering what year head unit would fit the car perfectly and make the keyless entry work? is it 96 - 98 or 96 - 00 or maybe something different?

You need a 96-98 RADIO to make the keyless work. The unit just needs power and the green connector plugged in to work - it can be hidden behind the dash and any other deck can be used

no, you just need to keep the factory deck plugged in, it doenst have to be installed in the din.
You run a Y-harness (look at the classified link in my sig if you want to see what one looks like...or buy it), keep the factory radio behind the dash or whereever and put a new deck in the din.
Again, you only have to have the radio powered and the greeen connector plugged in. You do NOT have to use the expanded cd player with the factory radio.

i don't understand how i install another harness though?
one goes to the oem radio, but how do i install the second one to go to my pioneer deck in the din? i would buy the harness from you if this process is not too complicated.

the y connector creates 2 plugs, one goes to the OEM, one you make to the transfer harness so you can hook it and the rest of the cables up to the pioneer deck
so you need a Y connector for the POWER, but I'm not sure if it comes in jsut the power, might Y connect all of them (that's the green plug), then with the left over plugs u need a radio transfer harness where one end fits ur pioneer deck and the other fits the stock honda harness..
- Y connector (Green plug)
- radio transfer harness (from OEM 98 honda to pioneer whatever ur serial number is)

Ok
The connector on the left side, connects directly to the car's radio harness.
The connector on the right, plugs into the factory radio (only supplies power, ground)
The bare wires, you connect directly to the new stereo's bare wires (off a connector). You will need to match up the speaker wires off the main harness to get it right. If you use your eyes and match things up, its a piece of cake.
With all that done, you just connect the green plug into the oem radio (this is the keyless wiring)....and put the radio where ever the hell you want to put it
I cant explain it any better than that. Its VERY simple, but youre giving it way too much credit on the difficulty meter.
If you can turn a screw, solder wires (or hell, quick connectors)...you can do this.

Word, I never thought of soddering all the wires into the new deck...there's just this shop I go to, you tell 'em ur harness age and model (like 97 nissan maxima) and you give them the serial number off ur deck and they give you a conversion harness O.o It's like $20

i broke my oem radio, so i bought another oem one. keyless doesn't work, can i get a harness like that for 2 oem radios??
there's got to be a better way to get keyless working than having the original one sitting back there.

There is - get an aftermarket alarm and wire that into the power locks.
There have been people on here that SAY they did it with a relay, but they never say how they did it...
The radio houses the control unit and receiver. Unless you have that powered up, I see no other way to do it. And without the unit itself, youre transmitting to nothing at all...kinda like a remote with no TV.
Youd be transmitting to nothing, unless you have an alarm brain that can do it instead.
And why the hell would you want 2 oem radios? Just get one that works...

yes it has it and it's plugged in, but i think the frequencies are different so it doesn't work with my key fob. i'll look into swapping parts of either radio to see if i can just have one in there, i'd hate to have an entire radio chillin behind my dash, but man do i miss my keyless entry
