Default quest for fuel economy

So 2 weeks ago i bought an 98 CX hatch 5 speed. has unknown mileage, though carfax shows 209k last report

but anyways,

The car is bone stock 100% i have replaced the entire exhaust except for the muffler and manifold (fixed the crack with some thermosteel crap i found at autozone.)

did my normal driving routing to work and back. maybe 85% highway?

went 204 miles on 5.44 gallons of fuel (verified by filling to the top of the neck before and after)

so right now i'm sitting at 37.5 mpg, and i'm on a quest for more

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I'm planning on lowering the car with either Tien S, or Skunk2 lowering springs (2.2" front and 2" rear)

free flowing exhaust. EX Header, high flow EX cat, modified EX midpipe, and my ansa silverlight muffler i ordered today.

a warm air intake ( going to build an intake from exhaust tubing which will be wraped with 5/8" copper tubing which will be plummed into the heater core hose to effectivly warm the intake temperature up pretty hot.

and a HX 5 speed transmission eventually as well.

My goal is to break 45 mpg while still driving normally. NO hypermiling.

If anyone has any other suggestions for fuel mileage increases besides from what i have stated, please feel free

i would love to get a D13 block from europe and throw a Vtec-E head on it, and run a small turbo, but i'm not in a rush to try and fab that up. I dont even know if you can use a vtec head on a D13, the block may be different like the D12 is.

Hypermiling

Don't see any way around it without an EMS and tune. Swaps and anything costing hundreds of dollars pretty much negates any cost saving you can get by optimizing driving habits to increase MPG.

It's like buying a $30,000 hybrid car to save maybe a couple hundred dollars a year. It doesn't make sense.

I'm not an expert, but wouldn't warmer intake air temps decrease mpg and power?

Warmer intake temps decrease power, but increase gas mileage by tricking the ECU into leaning out.

I was always under the impression that cold air increases power but kills economy, while warm air increases economy and kills performance

I have a 1998 civic ex 5sp with a short ram intake and 2.5" exhaust with 4-2-1 headers. I drive 84 miles to work and back every day and I get 49mpg average. The cx should get similiar if not better numbers then that. I dont do any hypermiling or anything special. I keep my shifts below 2600k and my highway rpm is 3k (70mph).

update.

i have installed a ANSA silverline axleback, and a warm air intake. shifting early, and double shifting when i can. and have netted a 44.3 mpg this week

next i'll be dropping it 2" and throwing a smooth lip on the front and see where that takes me

research the hot vapor fiero designed in the 80's. it hit 51 mpg. maybe you can use some of those ideas. i think it heats the fuel as well.

I'm thinking about using something like this.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Turbo-Barrel...sories&vxp=mtr

then tapping it into my heater hoses, and hopefully that will boost the intake temperature even more.

that fiero is sick! to think it gets the mileage, and power out of a 2bbl carb. to think he could get more economy and useable power with a 4bbl too

Go with a new ems/tune if ure not worried about a possible power loss. Better bang for ure buck IMO

can't. rhode island says i have to stay OBD2 for emmissions.

only way to tune is to go OBD1 with a chipped P05/06/28/72 ecu, or AEM stand alone, or megasquirt.

emissions is every 2 years, swap it back when it's time for testing.
