Quaife QR steering rack parts are in!!!

Quaife America has confirmed that the rack parts have arrived in stock, ready to ship next week some time. Both 88-91 and 92-95 Civic non-power steering are available. 3.25 turns lock to lock for the EFs and 2.8 turns lock to lock for the EG. Suggested retail is $239. We need a Honda-Tech sponsoring dealer to put together a group buy, or at least offer discount pricing.

These are just the rack parts correct? Basically you have to take apart your existing rack and install these gears right?

I was hoping for a full bolt on rack system.... http://images.honda-tech.com/set1//smile/emcrook.gif

Correct! However, the pinion has the bearing pressed on.

I'm just wondering how much of a PITA this will be before I even think about purchasing this. I looked at my Helms manual just to remove the steering rack and install these parts. There should only be about 2 to 3 reduction gears plus that bearing correct?

Is Fastbrakes still involved with this? Last price He posted was $275 I think.
So $239 is a little better. I am not looking forward to installing one thou

Wow this finally happened? I thought it was dead... I'm down, I will pull off the rack myself and have someone else install the parts. Would any competent mechanic be able to do it, or are there shops that specialize in steering rack rebuilds?

2point2 09-17-2004 08:12 AM

who, what, where !

links please!! https://honda-tech.com/forums/images...es/emsmile.gif

n1div 09-17-2004 09:05 AM

Although $239 might seem a bit steep for a Honda part, it pails in comparison for a qr rack for my Suby at $900. https://honda-tech.com/forums/images/smilies/emwink.gif

When and Where will this be available?

Please keep us updated.

Quaife America (Autotech, http://www.quaifeamerica.com ) will have them ready to ship next week.

No links to them anywhere that I know of. Only the info posted above.

Re: Quaife QR steering rack parts are in!!! (jwn7)

i remember a thread about this a couple months ago.

B18C5-EH2 brought up a good point:

Won't it be even harder to turn the steering wheel at very low speeds if you already don't have power steering in your car? This kit will reduce the amount of turns it takes to get from lock to lock thus making the steering tighter so it would only make sense that it would take more force to turn the wheel at parking speeds.

i am very interested btw, but i think we should know how much this will affect steering at low speeds.

Note: Tom, I am quoting from memory, if the above is inaccurate please correct.
Thanks.

Dumb question, but will this work for a civic that still has the powersteering rack, but no powersteering?

Unfortunately no.

This is accurate. The steering effort will definitely increase with a reduction in the ratio. How much is a very subjective thing. This will be known once the 1st kits are installed. My autocross Civic EF has 225/45-15 Hoosier A3S04s on 8.5" wheels, so the effort will certainly be evident once the swap take splace. I currently have no trouble turning the wheel for parking the car at events with the stock rack.

Re: Quaife QR steering rack parts are in!!! (Jaker)

So this steering upgrade will be tolerable for daily driving?

from_zer0 09-17-2004 02:31 PM

Re: Quaife QR steering rack parts are in!!! (Blue-Civic-Hybrid)

i also never thought i'd see the day, and am also interested to see how much it will be an issue in daily driving. the car (ed aka ef) is pretty responsive but i've always longed for a shorter spin, lock-to-lock, but not in lieu of driveability.

I'll be staying up on this thread, may very well be worth the ca$h if labor is reasonable (or personally manageable)

Ah, leave it to Quaife to patch up the little things our factory-direct econo-boxes are occasionally deficient in https://honda-tech.com/forums/images/smilies/emwink.gif https://honda-tech.com/forums/images/smilies/emthup.gif

If the steering is tolerable on a daily driver i am totally down. I'm sure that is the deciding factor in alot of people's minds.

Aquafina 09-19-2004 01:06 PM

I have no problem with my 96 DX, but have never driven a EH without PS. If they make one for an EJ and it is not much worse than stock, I'll snatch one up.

As far as tracking/AX, how will this affect steering at speed? I'm assuming it will be more like PS but let you retain the control better? Can someone pipe in on this?

Mista Bone 09-19-2004 11:45 PM

If you autox a Civic and find yourself getting behind in the slalom because so the slow steering..............this is your answer!!!!!!!!

Never had PS, never needed it!!!!!!!
