putting on headers for my d16y7
so my cat is bad right now..check engine light is on...and i want to throw on some headers..my cat is right under my manifold, anybody here know how i cant put on headers and not have a check engine light on..the shop quoted me 370 to do everthing, like bung wires or somthing like that, and im not going to spend that much just to put on headers and all the other stuff needed...something about dummy sensors...help would be appreciated.

Re: putting on headers for my d16y7
buy 15 dollar header put it on there then use an O2 dummy. or move the cat...tough work i know.
you could buck up and actually spend the money to have a decently running car. but we all know thats not happening.
or just take the light out.

Re: putting on headers for my d16y7
Iv got ebay headers and cat with no CEL, got all my O2 sensors still their with no wiring modification. Stock internal d16y7. I pass inspection easy too. You should be fine. And headers are a fairly simple DIY. Hope this helped.

I didn't need a new O2 sensor or need to mod it when I put my header on. No CEL. I did get a CEL when I put my test pipe on however.
And $370 to do it?! I hope you accidentally hit the 0 and meant $37..
You know how much horsepower this header is going to gain you, correct?

To do it "correctly", youll need the following
$50 eBay header
$15 o2 extension harness; also on eBay
$10 o2 defoulder; also on eBay
-Install the header
-Get a 7/8th o2 sensor socket and move the primary o2 onto the new header; usually on runner 4
-Put the defouler on the header's secondary o2 bung
-Install secondary o2 onto that defoulder
-Connect the extension harness to the secondary o2 plug and the engine harness
Done. If dont correctly you wont have a CEL. It seems like a lot but its not, and you shouldnt spend anymore than $80. With the extra $300 you wouldve spent, get new tools. Make sure you use a socket so you can torque it down enough. I used a wrench and then my o2 fell out.
This is what a defouler looks like, it basically puts the o2 sensor farther from the exhaust stream to trick it into thinking it has a catalytic converter.
