Default Putting engine at TDC

Why do you need to put the engine at TDC before taking the headout.

What if you just make a mark on the cam, and than take the head out, than you can just align it with that mark???

what if you don't put the crank at tdc, and just make a mark on the cam, than reverse the process

Just go ahead and put it to TDC.

What reason would you have for not doing so?

the reason i'm asking is because i'm tearing out my Mazda MPV mini van.
and on the cams it doesn't say up nor there is a arrow.
All there is, is a R and L on each cam. I don't even think that they're aligned, like our cars are.

My brother in-law said to just mark them with a marker, because when you shut the car off, they automatically come to the cyl. one and stop.

Just take the time to put it at TDC. Since your taking the head off and the belt will either be just chilling to the side or completely off, you don't want for some reason somebody or somehow the crank to get turned a little. If so, when you put the motor back together you could have way more problems than when you started. At least when everything is at TDC when you start tearing stuff apart, you have a place to line everything up when you get back to putting it back together.

timing problems. also, if it is an interference engine, your valves will say hello to your pistons.
