Problem with interior light on 98 Civic?
I just purchased a 98 Civic HX and the interior light works (on the continuous 'on' position) but when the switch is in the middle the light is supposed to come on when I open the driver or passenger door but it doesn't come on. Does anyone know what might be wrong? Is there a simple fix? Thanks

if you have an aftermarket cd player and dont have the stock radio that is your problem, for some reason they put the dome light control in the radio, along with security system too if you happen to have it

if you have a 96-98 then your factory head unit is probably hooked up and buried somewhere behind the dash...
You need the factory radio for dome light, security and keyless

How can one get a factory head unit? I've got an aftermarket stereo/CD player, but I'm not thrilled with it either. Could I replace it with a stock unit? Where does one find one of these for a 98 Civic HX?

I always try to first rule out the simple stuff when diagnosing problems on ~10 year old cars... are you sure your door switches are working?
The door switches probably work based on passing current when the door's open, so you'd need to unscrew the switch and momentarily bridge the connectors. If the light still stays off, the switch is fine and you can move onto the more difficult causes.
While it's unlikely that both switches are dead, you never know what the previous owners did... they could've just not replaced the switches, eventually they'd both be dead.
This is why I like being the only owner of my 10 year old car. Far fewer mysteries.

Then you are the exception. There are already numerous threads on this - search.

Sure did find it. The crappy thing about it is it is just AM/FM since there was a CD changer hooked to it. I do also still have the changer if you are interested. And as far as the radio is concerned, I wouldn't want more than $20.

Thanks Shane. I think I'll have to pass. I guess I'll have to sit in the dark while listening to my CD's on my aftermarket unit!

PDIGGITYDOGG,
Could you please give me more specific details how to wire it so I can get the light to turn on in the middle position with the door open?
I'm not super savvy when it comes to electrical wiring. Computers I know. Wiring and electrical I'm afraid not. So any detailed help you could provide would be greatly appreciated.

there is a green keyless entry plug behind your radio. to make the domelight work you must jumper the lt. green/red wire with the lt.green/black wire and this will complete the circuit. those of you that have aftermarket decks and your light still works, its because the person putting it your radio jumped it already. there are no fluke cases it has to be jumped for the light to work. hope this helps.
