problem with friends 96 civic
Car is a 96 civic with a jdm b16 with a obd1 p30 and conversion harness
My friend went to go drive one day and his car wouldnt start he finally got it started and he said it ran like crap and then died again down the road and would not start. I checked the car over and found out the timing belt was stretched and tensioner was not working properly, and also the ignition coil was bad. So i went out for a spin and vtec would not engage, after words he said that a week before this the check engine light was blinking and vtec wouldnt work and it would bog and would nt go over 5k rpms he said. It doesnt have a check engine light now and i cant figure out the problem, it runs now but doesnt have vtec tho? Anyone have any insight to help me?

yeah i was gonna try that, oil is fine, i put in a stock obd2a p28 for a sohc vtec and vtec worked but it has a trouble code for a ckf sensor malfunction because its an obd1 motor i assume, doesnt have it, i was using that ecu so if a light popped up i could scan it instead of blinking out the code

jdm motors dont have that sensor.. and if the timing belt stretched u might want to replace that and the tensioner...
did u test the vtec solenoid?

go there.. it should help u out man

Re: problem with friends 96 civic (ITR.#1446)
drain the oil, replace filter and see if it clears
Could be water
happened to a buddy of mine with a b16. But vtec would engage and disenage and reengage and so forth. It sounded like rev limiter! It was actually funny. it would engage fine in first and as soon as you would go into 2nd and then it would start popping in and out!
Changed the oil and filter. Went away. Just a thought though.

yeah i replaced the tensioner and spring also, i have not checked the solenoid but it worked everytime when i running the obd2 sohc vtec p28 as soon i switched back to the obd1 p30 didnt work i even tried a obd1 gsr ecu and still didnt work. He is due for an oil change and he said started the problem one day when it was raining so its worth a shot but i never heard that before.

Unless he wants to get another conversion harness that wouldn't work 99-00 = obd2b... 96 = obd2a
A sensor or connector may have gotten wet... should throw a code though...
Is the oil pan dented? That can cause vtec to not engage then go into limp mode...

yeah its not throwing any codes..... im gonna check the oil pan but how would it being dented affect anything?

just change the oil.. and see what happens.. ok if vtec works with the single cam ecu.. something seems to be wrong with the jumper harness or ecu..

If it's dented the oil pickup could be messed up or not have enough space to get a good flow of oil...
I'd also check the screen on the vtec solenoid... it can get clogged and cause similar issues...

a few more reasons vtec is useless, im just kidding, just non-vtec is tempting for those who don't really care about gas mileage, and you would pick up on that low-end
