Default power steering opinions needed...

while i have my engine bay empty for my swap, would i b worth it to replace the power
steering rack with a manual rack seein i won't b using power steering? i heard it will
make steering alot easier and a manual rack can b had for cheap from a junkyard, also
bought new for cheap...or should i just run p/s and lose +/- 1ft/lb of tq lol

IMO, I would use the manual p/s rack. Driving a car with out p/s feels so much better than with p/s. Feels more real to me

when your using a Power steering rack with out fluid its like turning the wheel of your car when its off but you have the key in it all those extra pumps and crap in there vs just a simple manual rack with the gears made to turn the wheels with out assist from a hydrolic system

umm, i understand the difference between manual and p/s...my questions were does
a manual rack make it easier to steer vs a p/s rack w.o fluid bein pumped thru, and should
i do w.o p/s or just put a pump on the motor and run p/s??

I would say definitely put a manual rack in if your not gonna run power steering.

I prefer manual to power steering, but it's not really good to take the pump off a normal power steering rack.

why the hell would you do that? extra work and cash for nothing. if you're not gonna use the p/s then dont put the belt on. plus, if you decide to sell the car, most people want p/s.

also, if this is your dd, parking is gonna suck. using p/s is prob gonna make you lose 1-2hp. you're not gonna feel any different if you werent using p/s. now if its your all out drag car than yeah maybe.

its better to change the rack n pinion so it doesnt freeze up from not having hydrolic fluid... as for the question.. id use a manual rack theirs no point in power steering on such a little car anyway

X2, if you completely remove the pump and don't put a manual rack in, it will cause damage.

I've wanted to try this before but I didn't know if it would cause any problems or do damage to anything. If I just remove the belt without removing the pump, it's completely save to drive?

One of my buddy's did it and his p/s fluid reservor over flowed like crazy. That's why I thought it would cause problems.

What would cause the reservor to over flow like that?

Take the pump off your rack and run some new lines to a breather that way you leave the fluid in the rack and it can move up and down when you turn the wheel

i didn't say i was goin to do it, i title the thread for "opinions" and the only reason
i considered puttin in a manual rack was cuz my b18 comes with no pump, and the
engine bay will be empty soo i figured it wouldn't be much a hassel...but ya i miss
power steering it's awesome
btw...i no i won't lose anything noticable power wise...i'll just throw some NOS stickers
in my window to make up for it jk lol
anyways thanks for all the replies, i'm just gonna buy a pump for the b18 and drive belt
and run p/s
oh, and i'm not sure how long the rack hasn't had fluid goin through it so how can i tell if
it's messed up already or not?

Instead of tossing a non p/s rack in their you could just take the lines off your p/s rack and loop the lines so fluid will move through the rack. Its bad to run a p/s rack w/ no fluid parts bear out w/ out lube. Ill see if i can find a picture of what Im talking about.

Does anyone have any detailed info or a DIY thread/website you can give me that that will explain this step by step?
