I drive a 98 civic hatch.. My power steering recently went out.. Before it went out it squeaked while i drove.. the faster i went the faster it squeaked.. when i turned the wheel to the left it would squeak louder.. now my power steering is gone and the squeak is still there with the same symptoms.. I've looked at the belt and its not worn out or anything.. doesnt seem too tight or too lose.. Could this be the power steering unit itself or maybe the pulley?? any ideas?

Was it topped off with the proper fluid? Honda's do require a special power steering fluid.

I just bought the car recently with plans of fixin it up so i dont know what kind of fluid its filled with.. but it is topped off.. should i drain it and refill it?

you should definitely drain out the fluids for sure! While you are at it, replace the power steering pump, its cheap and not hard to change out.
