Default Power Steering

I am looking at a 92 Vx hatch and I was wondering how big of a difference does the power steering make in the handling? This car will mostly be driven around town.

power sterring imo is over rated. the only difference i notice is when you are completely stopped, and even then it helps build muscular arms for all the chicks youll be picking up in the lighter, quicker car

it won't affect handeling realy just slow speed turns below about 15 mph will be harder and parking will suck.

not having power steering is great! Especially on those vx tires, it will be easy as hell to turn the wheel, unless youre some scrawny bastard. At high speeds the car will seem more stable and less snappy.

I have to disagree. I took off my belt recently and it is hard as **** to turn it. You can't make quick turns with the belt off. You can't just jerk the wheel at the last second and have the car take the corner.

Parking lot parking is a pain in the ***. I think I am going to put my belt back on because I liked turning quickly a lot better than I like having a tad more top end.

Lemme compare my cars.. and others..

DSM has PS.. I like it on it.. cause it weighs ~3200 lbs.. etc..

My hatch, no PS. Love it.. I can turn one handed while stopped no problem.. when moving, steering has a better 'feel.'

Friends slo, same as my hatch...

Another friends EK with PS but the belt taken off is still very easy, just as easy as my hatch probally and it has the power steering rack.

From a Handling standpoint. Manual Rack = much higher ratio. Not performance oriented obviously it was made to be somewhat easy on the econo cars. Yes your arms will be tired as hell the first couple times out to the track, but you get use to it. If you can deal with it you can go the RTR way. IMO I was not to keen on having a daily driven car with a power steering rack with no pump and no fluid circulating threw it. So I bought a '97 DX rack from a junk yard for $100. Daily driving is cake. Like I said the only trade off is the ratio. The direct feel I like a lot more then the numb feeling I get from power steering, however there is a slight trade off for initial turn in and overall responce. Overall I am happy with the change.

no ps with 205+ tires is a bitch when doing U turns or turning at a dead stop, other than that, no ps is okay especailly when the tires are small..

When I took my belt off the steering was a lot tougher than when I eliminated the pump all together and looped the high pressure line to the return line at the rack. With the pump in the system you're trying to pump fluid through the pump with the steering rack when the pump is not turning. This is hard. A lot of cars are un-steerable with the belt off. As in, you cannot turn the wheel at all (hardly).

The trick is you don't turn the wheel until the car starts to roll a little. I don't even notice that i don't have it anymore.

What about if you were to do an engine swap. I want to put a B16 or B18 in my 96 hatch (which doesn't have PS). Do these engines come with the PS pumps and misc parts that you'll need? How hard would it be to convert to PS?

I wanted to get P/S in my car too but I've been told that I can't do it cuz the CX never came with P/S. Sucks, but if you keep the car rolling a bit, you don't notice a damn thing. Frankly, I don't mind either way.

I'm pretty sure you can swap in a power rack from another model Civic and then add the power steering reservor and pump .

I've got a little pigdog Si with power steering. I enjoy the ease of steering at <10mph, but I hate the overextension you get at speeds around 35+mph. If you've driven vehicles without power steering, you'll notice a detatched feeling at those speeds, and that isn't good for safety.

My brother's B18C1 hatchback doesn't have power steering. I used to hate it because I'd try to turn the wheels with the car at a dead stop. I was young and stupid . All you have to do is roll at about 2mph and you don't notice a thing. Turns at anything greater than 5mph feel nice and stable, and I'd assume that the car reacts nicely to high-speed maneuvers better than a PS equipped vehicle would.

I haven't removed it from my Si because I'm not trying to make power with it until I swap a different engine in to replace the 1/4 of a million mile z6.

Supposedly you can swap the Si rack in there and add P/S but would you use the P/S materials from prelude or the civic? Sorta dumb question but I just wanna know.

power steering is for pussies. I took mine out and looped the rack. It feels so much better now. I noticed a nice little power boost in all rpms and now I have way better steering response. Espescially on the highway. It makes taking those highway exits a lot more fun . Its also not as twitchy. At first I thought it was near impossible to turn the wheel because I was so used to p/s, but once I got used to it it wasn't bad at all...espescially after you remove the pump and lines and drain some of the fluid out. Its even better if you go all the way and make a breather setup with a resivior. Then it almost feels like p/s isn't gone at all.

too be honest, i reduced the boost a bit with a larger pulley. it increases feel at lower rpms. also, reducing the boost stops the p/s fluid from boiling over at 9500 rpm. without it, it would be a serious chore to turn hot sticky 225/45-15 hoosiers on a 8.5" wheel.

haha i'll pass on that offer I'm just saying the steering response is way better without it. Its just so twitch with power steering. I feel like I have less control over the car.

only thing gay about no power steering is the big grooves in the roads makes the wheel pull to the left out of no where. thats the only real annoyance i get with my pos cx.
