Default Power of a d15 vtec and a non vtec

Hi everyone, let me introduce my car first,i have honda civic sedan 97 with a d15z4 non vtec engine, with sport air filter, custom exhaust 2'' piping,4-2-1 header.well, yesterday my friend and me raced on the motorway and i beat him.My friend owns a civic 92 sedan with a d15b 3 stage vtec,The engine is in great cond, mods like sport air filter,2.25'' exhaust piping. So i want to know is it normal that a non vtec can beat a vtec? Both engines are stock.

The d15 3-stage vtec is a useless motor...
You better hope you beat him.

Someone can chime in on how the 3 stage is different from single stage.

so in the end what i can conclude is that a 3 stage generates less power than a single stage vtec, though the 3 stage has a factory 130hp.this is because of the 3 stage transition of vtec cam lobe.the low end power is weaker than the single stage,12v and 16v mode.now i can understand.

The JDM D15B is also SOHC VTEC and produces 130hp.

I am in the same position as you, i have a 99 civic lxi with a d15z4 engine (105HP) my friend has a 95 vti hatch with jdm d15b single vtec engine (130HP) both cars were stock at the time we raced, i ended up winning by little.

Mean while i threw in some mods intake headers exhaust and we raced again i completely left him in the dust and his engine was stock no mods (same as before).

After a while my friend changed engine he swapped out his jdm d15b single vtec for a d15b 3stage vtec engine (130hp) was in great condition..so we raced again, and agian i left him in the dust.

I dont know why the d15z4 engine would be faster than both vtec engines its puzzling and further more some b's cant hang with it, i did some mods like y8 mani swap and ajustable fuel regulator competition clutch kit stage 1 copper, act prolite fly wheel, nology wires and a DIY cold air intake now making 143hp..

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xnRkss4ogvc all the 99 lxi vids are mine dyno pull lxi vs sir (before clutch kit)

so to end it i dont know why d15z4 stock for stock beats a vtec d15b lol
