post quick! have 20 min!
I found a 96' civic HX 5 speed with 110000 miles. No CD or stereo It has nice paint, red. It has only a few scraches. It is in nice condition, but they are asking 4900, I plan on offering 4000, (kbb for good cond) It is probabley excellent though (4500 at kbb) as the paint and overall condition is truely quite nice. It did not seem too under powered. I need this car for a d/d, not going to mod it at *all*, so it is ok if it is slow. Should I offer 4k cash, and then he will most likely say now way, then should I ask HIM what a fair price is. Then he will say like 4700, then I will tell him blue book and yada yada. Would 4.5k be a good deal for me, or should I go for about 4300 or something. I got about 20 mins before he gets home and I can talk to him in person.
thanks.
thanks.

Since it has 110000, it's probably time for a new timing belt and water pump. Figure in you'll need new OEM plugs, OEM wires, OEM water pump, OEM timing belt, etc...you'll definitely need to bring that price down. If it's in PERFECT condition, grab it for no more than $4200.

should I go by the kbb value? Like good=4000? I got 7 min
It is not perfect, probably a bit better then good I would say, not much.
above the bumper there is a black plastic piece that is cracked fairly badly, you cant see it unless you get down on all fours though. hmmm, 0 rust. Can't think of anything else

Yes. If he has maintenance records then maybe a little more, but if not tell him that you'll have to get timing belt & water pump done within the next 10K miles, and that's 300 easy...

do what he just said, offer no more than $4200 for it. if you only have 7 min, you;d better hurry up and just give them $4200 for it or else it is no more.

Well, I talked to him and he said 4400 is the lowest he will go. He is a mechanic, asian guy. Well, you know about the car. I have to make a decision fairly quick, he will sell the thing very soon.

Re: (clm)
I got my 98 HX with 91k on it just a couple weeks ago for 4600, but it's been lowered, so that might take a bit off. Pretty good condition too.

I don't know if I told you yet, but the car was in a minor crash. He said that all that needed replacement was the headlight, and he fixed a crack in the bumper. It looks as good as new now. But the issue is in the carfax. I got the carfax report and it said that it has a Salvage title in big red letters. It says:
Severe problems (major accidents, fire, flood damage, major odometer problems or lemon history) were reported by a Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) for this 1996 HONDA CIVIC HX (1HGEJ712XTL03xxxx).
The only problem out of these is: It was severely damaged and issued a Salvage title by a Minnesota DMV. Everything else is clean. I don't know what to think of this. I think he may have had to get a salvage title if it was in an crash of any kind, big or small. He said when I buy it (if) it will have a clean title because it was fixed. is this true?

It would only have a salvage title if it was totalled by the insurance company.
Salvage titles do not just go away, there are certain procedures you must go through. Check with your state's DMV first.
A salvage-titled car is worth significantly less than a normal car, may have problems related to the damage, and also cannot be insured with full coverage AFAIK.

Re: (mnbv)
man, a salvage title cuts the price of the car in almost half in most cases. knowing that i dont think its worth that. an accidednt thats been reported on the cars history makes it an "unverifiable" car. you dont know who did the work, how bad the damage was. ive seen 10mph impacts totaly screw up the the alignment on a car. at most i would give 3500. if he doesnt go with, it might not be worth it. you dont know if that car is going to go through tires, or because of misalignment of a mount it could devoled a tranny problem, and once replaced keep devoleping the same proble. i only tell you this cause thats what i went through. the 91 civic i had was a salvage title. 2 months after i had it, boom, tranny went out. $400 and six months later, boom, another. ok, maybe it was a bad tranny that time. so 4 months later, boom, another. just stuff like that you gotta watch out for. hope this help you out man.

Re: (CarsCarsCars)
I think I may take the risk because of the fact that I don't think that i will have problems with this crash down the line. It was just cosmetic damage that was fixed, and it looks fine now. You know what I mean?

ur call man if the car is salvaged its hard to resell it and wutever it says on carfax is true so if it said flood it went through a flood and the guy changed the motor or wutever its honestly ur call but savaged cars are usually a lot cheaper because no one wants it i drive a theft recovered salvaged car. not all salvaged car are totalled like one person posted.

I paid $4500 for my 97 DX coupe with 131,000 on it. So far I have replaced the clutch, all fluids, tune up, fuel filter etc. Runs like a charm, no leaks, and ice cold A/C. Also had Rota's on it. I bought it like a year and a half ago. Still gets me 34 MPG on the highway

good to know, it matches up with my car value wise. (price vs value)
He bought this car for himself originaly and fixed it up himself for cheap. He must have gotten a good deal, he bought it from an insurance company. He dident plan on selling it right away, he needs to sell it because he needs a 4 door car because of kids. I think the salvage title was given to it for a not very serious reason like it normaly is. I think I will still get it.

Bro, I paid $3100 for a 1995 Honda Civic DX Sedan 5MT, MINT exterior, interior was ok (woman had a baby), WOMAN driver, 114k. All I had to do was fix a P/S line leak, new brake pads, and the usual maintenence of plugs, wires, timing belt, tensioner, water pump, and thermostat. Look around.

Hmmm, I hate second guessing myself. I have to decide by tomorrow morning. I like the car, I just don't know about the price. I am the first person that is looking at it, I know that if I don't get withen a day, it will be gone, it really is a nice car. If I go by the kbb, I am getting about an even deal between me and him. he title just complicates things. arrrgg!!

Re: (mnbv)
Oh BTW KBB does not give you values for Salvaged cars.. IMHO I would offer $2500 no more.. Salvaged is hard to resell and is always 40% or more cheaper then a clean title car.
so If your wanting to spend that kind of money you should look around and find one with a clean title.

I paid 5200 for my 98 Dx with 70k about 2 year ago....Clean title , not original paint though....from Ebay...I think it was a very good deal...
Dont rush ...shop around ...Dealer need you ..you dont need them ....and they are def. 40% or more cheaper then a clean title car.
