Default Possible to make a B16B pass emissions on ca?

Since this engine is only available in JDM models, I was wondering if its possible to make this pass emissions, if it is, can you please tell me how, I did a search and saw some methods, but I dont know if they apply to this engine, thank you for your help.

Look up Spade (H-T member) he started the whole JDM engines can pass. And you know what, they can. Look up BAR.

Mainly it has to be same year motor or newer then the car.

Correct.
Unless the Ref that you went to was willing to throw some of the rules out the window, it's not legal.

For good reason. The air quality in Los Angelas is very poor, and only getting worse. The strict guidelines that are currently used in California, will probably start to spread East over time.

thats not true, you just need to hook up every thing to u.s spec's .i can ref my b16 in my 91 hb si as long as i convert it to delsol spec's(i.e) 4 wire o2 sensor running obd-1 instead of the original 0 and and a del sol ecu instead of my pr3 ecu.

What model Del Sol in the US came with a B16B Civic Type R motor?
If it's not available in the US, it's not able to be certified.
The B16 obviously was available in the Del Sol Vtec and Civic Si, but this is a different motor.

So it must be a USDM engine? I read on some other thread that it didnt matter if the engine was UDSM or JDM

No, it doesn't have to be a USDM motor, but there must be an equivalent available in US sold vehicles. For example, you can certify a JDM B16a, because there's an equivalent available in the Del Sol and Si. Since the B16b comes in the CTR, there's no equivalent for in the US, since we don't get that model here.

also, if you really want to go through with certifying your motor.. in the FAQ section of this forum there is a link on how to vertify your JDM motor.

P.S. out of curiosity, would a 96 B18C TypeR pass? And work on my car? Since 95 - 96 have differant body styles, and my car is a 95. Im pretty sure they offer a B18C-R in the US.

They did not offer b18c type r in the 92-95 years. All of the ITR's are obdII. You have to run the emissions from the year of vehicle that the motor is coming out of.

I've seen a couple of obdII jdm motors that got BAR stickers in obdI cars... So I think it really does matter which Ref you go to. All of the itr motors are 96+. I know for sure you can get a jdm gsr OBDI motor and it can easily be bard.

you can use an OBD2 motor and pass it as an OBD1 motor IF there was an obd1 equivalent motor, e.g. you can have a 97 GSR motor, converted to obd 1 and run it in a 93 civic (telling the ref it's a 95 obd1 motor). however, the b18c5 was never available in the states as an obd1 motor, so if you install it into a obd1 car, you need to add the additional wires for the obd2 ecu, including the diagnostic port.

the b16b can pass smog as long as u get everything needed for that motor such as hardess and cat and all that stuff needs to be for the b16b.

there is no such thing as a "cool" ref. they're at the top of the auto inspection food chain. you could have a 351 windsor in a CRX if it was built car a car (not a truck), is newer than the car its going into, and has all the smog equipment on it

negatory. did you read any of the posts in this thread? the b16b is not an acceptable replacement engine as no car in the US was ever sold with anything like the b16b.

negative on your quote. I had a b16b I passed inspections. It can be done soo it can pass emissions. What I failed on is the ASM Emissions otherwise I would have had a sticker. It depends on the ref like I said numerious times trust me I been to ref soo many fucken times like 13 times I told the ref the motor is a del sol motor he said OK. I even confirmed with the local station boss So it can be done. Just make sure your motor passes the ASM test and you should be fine. I seen fucken obd0 motors pass. Depends on the REF
