Thinking of adding a side marker light to my car for visibility purposes. But not too eager on the idea of cutting a hole into my fender. Are there any ideas for installing a sort of side marker into the small side molding piece seen in the pictures here?

Either way you have to cut a hole so why not cut it in the right place. Sidemarkers in the molding area look out of place. Tape the area needed to cut, make a template, and use a dremel. Measure twice, cut once.

Way back in the early to mid 90's that's how a lot of people used to do it. They'd use the existing hole from the molding and use the sidemarker in place of the molding.

That hole is not nearly big enough for the side marker, You have to enlarge it anyway. Unless he is using a generic sidemarker.
