Default Pos and Neg battery wire aka: check engie light

Had my check engine light come on last week. Long story, here goes:

Had a full exhaust put on about a month ago. Did the the header swap myself due to local regulations. Now on the o2 sensor i had to cut the wires and use an impact driver to break the sucker loose not knowing they made a sensor socket. Spliced the wires back together/ not soldered/ installed and ran fine for the time being. No light or any problem. Car last week started acting funny on the road. No check light, but would run at rpm with the gas all the way to the floor with no rpm gain, then would recover like nothing was wrong. This problem was very random. 1st idea was the o2 sensor so i started talking to people and they are saying the car should run without the sensor, but like ****. Pulled it, light came on, ran at idle then did a rpm drop, recovered, idle to a drop and die. Replaced the sensor, pulled the POS battery cable and main relay fuse/ 7.5amp/ and still nothing. Have pulled the cap, wires, plugs, etc OK.

Now with my searching everyone list the NEG wire to be pulled. Whats the difference?? I know everyone is going to say check the code, but the car for 4 year has never had any problem till this / self induced. Scheduled for a tow and check at the shop tomorrow but would like some input. Thanks Todd
